Default i don't think anyone can help me..

ok, so I am COMPLETELY NEW to the world of the awesome trans-am's.

I'm considering buying a 1997 ws6 t/a with a lot of mod's done to it. I am unsure about the mod list but I know it's nothing crazy, mostly headers / exhaust / cai / shifter upgrade etc,

that being said, here's the issue...

the owner claims the car will crank but not start. he said eventually it will start and idle but you can't touch the gas pedal, if you do it dies.. i'm trying to figure out what could be causing this, but i was told by the owner it's an ignition problem then told by my ls loving friend it could be fueling... i'm utterly confused...help?

i think it is a lt1 and for sure is an opti-spark, or so the owner says... i'm not 100% sure, i'm really sorry for the vague description..

I work on a lot of cars, but I have never seen an engine so touchy to bad sensors than the LT1. Optispark is the most likely culprit.

It is indeed either fuel or ignition like about 99.9 and 9/10'ths and 15/16th's of all engine issues. Don't consider buying it unless it's fixed by the seller.

Maybe the gas pedal sensor is bad causing the computer to default to reading the yaw sensors.

Ive seen a TPS have an issue like that. Theres a carbon surface inside a TPS sensor that can wear down or get dirty. It works alot like a rheostat switch on a light dimmer... Once it wears down in a certain spot, it becomes a dead spot... before and after that spot, contact is regained and it will operate in those spots, but not in the worn spot which would make sense being just off idle....thats a spot the throttle position sees alot of the time.

My other thought would be a vacume issue perhaps.

Pass. Unless you are getting an amazing deal on this car, most of the WS6 cars are overpriced just because it says WS6. To me a base T/A is a couple of suspension mods and a different hood away from being equal to a WS6.

Oh and the fact the thing doesn't run so you can't find any other issues it might have since it can't even move, it better be dirt cheap.

It could be a hole between the MAF and Throttle body, like in the intake elbow. Check to see if the silencer has been removed. If so see if the plug for it fell out. The silencer is located on the bottom of the elbow, it's about 12" long. If it's gone and the hole is open it will run exactly like you described.

hey thanks so much for the advice.

price is definitely a steal.. i could sell the rims and tires for 2x what i'm buying it for.

i went and saw it today, it actually started 4 times, ran like crap though because of the timing, definitely timing...
for the short bit the engine ran, it sounded healthy, no deep knocks or ticks - out the exhaust sounded very healthy too, just had the misfire / skip from the timing...took lots of detailed pics - looks really nice to me (not saying much since i've never owned one) - but i looked on the door, it says WS9 W55 not ws6, but the back bumper actually has paint missing from where a ws6 badge was apparently ripped off - it's on the bottom right. not sure what the ws6, ws7, ws9 or w66 or w55 mean - read a few posts about the differences but still unsure. It's definitely the opti-spark, so he's throwing in a free brand new msd distributor for me, still in the box.

can anyone clarify what these codes actually mean? I know ws6 and ws7 are hard to find and pretty pricey if they're authentic, but i don't know about the ws9's.

It could be
Optispark,ICM,Coil,Ignition,Ignition key, battery,PCM or wire harnesses to ignition components (in my case it was the optispark harness) if spark its fuel
Fuel rail, fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, fuel filter omg the list gose on and on and on!
I bought a 95 trans am not running 3 months ago for 2grand that was my first mistake!!! It took 2 months to diagnose and fix what was wrong trust me it was a head ace if its not running WALK AWAY!!!
btw 99.9 percent of the time its optispark issuses

thanks hypno, really appreciate the tip, i'm going to take a shot in the dark and still get it. It may be a big mistake but i actually have a pretty good feeling about it now that y'all have posted comments telling me common problems and typical symptoms from other forums, really helpful. thanks a million everyone. now all i gotta do is find out if the ws9 is as good as the ws6....

RPO code pulls a pontiac firebird transam formula base,
