Shortys, Mids, LT's 1993 Z28, 6 speed, 3:23 gears. So how much real world difference between these types of headers? My car is a basically stock engine, pulley, aluminum intake elbow, MSD ignition,irridium plugs and 8mm wires are really the only engine mods. I want to keep the o2 bungs and the AIR fittings so Im pretty much having to count out LT's. I found some, but jesus, theyre astronomically priced.. I refuse to pay the 1000-13000 dollar prices they want especially if the gains are minimal. Car runs strong and very well, but has alot of miles on it, so Im probably not going to do much performance modification....maybe NEW replacement parts, like valve springs and seals and prolly new injectors, but nothing over stock specification. |
On a dyno you'd likely see the longer larger tubes making more horsepower at higher rpms. But with your mods the difference wouldn't be much. Pacesetter makes some mids with Y for about $300 I thought. Those should work nicely for you. Some people are pushing 425rwhp+ through 1-5/8" mid and shorties. So yes, you're losing horsepower with the smaller shorter headers, but it's not a lot like everyone leads to believe. I'd guess 5-10 horsepower on a heads/cam car. |
Count out shorties. They honestly don't make enough over stock manifolds to be worth it. I don't have personal experience, but from what others have told me Pacesetter mids are not too bad. Now pacesetter does also make long tubes with the correct smog fittings. Couldnt he weld an 02 bung on it or would it put it too far downstream compared to stock manifolds? have to pass smog? |

I don't see how O2's being further down the exhaust would cause issues with emissions. Plus obd1 cars luck out in that the stock cat location is damn close to where it'd be with a smog legal y pipe (if not the same exact spot, I don't know since I don't run a cat). So it should pass that way if he has an inspection. What's funny is in my state I doubt I'd fail even without a cat. All obd1 vehicles use the same readings for a pass, essentially a big block Chevy pickup from 1987. He can also remove the air pump and still pass emissions. The air pump us only used for the first few minutes after start up to heat the cat up quicker. |

Hrcslam, thanks for the links. In my searching, they never came up because I always put in 93 for the year.... $315.00 looks like a great price. The car isnt driven in any kind of weather other than sunny days and on a very part time basis. Also living in southern Colorado, its very dry and arid climate lends itself to "no rust". Looking at those, they have the small ear on them which I will have to block off, my 93 doesnt have fittings that go there. Also, Ill need wire extensions for the O2 placement....where/who sells them? You guys's help is appreciated, thanks again! |

I stared out with Pacesetter mids and ran them for bought a year, they were a nightmare to work around. I switched to PAcesetter long tube they are much easier to work around, I run the 72c2239c they don't have the emissions, you would prolly want the 72c2235 they have the emissions . I would highly recommend the ceramic coating, we'll worth the money, you will also need the HP y pipe, got mine from Summit. |

You should get a heated o2 kit when you go long tubes. Plus with that you don't need to buy (or run) extensions. I got mine from fastbird performance- plug n play, took me about 15 minutes to install, mostly trying different ways to route the wires. |

Yeah my Pacesetter LT's came with 02'extensions no lights on yet with no problems. Nice sound from the car after the LT's were installed. |
