Location of the Canister Purge Valve in a '96 Trans Am A4
 

I'm trying to find the location of the canister purge valve in my '96 Trans Am. I've been looking all over the internet and I cannot seem to find out were the actual location is, and it's not the EVAP purge canister that's on the passenger side of the manifold either. I replaced that one already a few months back in summer. Can someone help me please? Thank you.

EDIT: Just to clarify, this diagram is for my own vehicle which is a 94. I believe the 96-97 have a switch in the general canister vicinity to alert the PCM that EVAP is operating properly.

You may have your terminology confused. Evap. purge and canister purge are the same thing. 96-97 had the purge and vacuum switch on the passenger side of the intake next to each other. The purge is rectangular in shape, and the switch is cylindrical.

What is the issue you are trying to fix?

I'm sorry for being confused. It's a round shape purge valve that is located somewere near the gas tank or around there.

The actual purge valve is located on the passenger side of the intake manifold. If you have it, it's the solenoid connected to a ridiculously long plastic tube that runs under the throttle body and connects to a hose coming out of the drivers inner fender.

Open up your fuel filler door, remove the screws that hold the plastic "filler piece", then slip the filler piece out, and you'll find what you're looking for.....

What exactly is your problem? That might help more than throwing parts at it. You say you already replaced the EVAP purge solenoid valve, but with what brand? Did you test it? I had one bad right out of the box.

Are you looking for the pressure control valve? I accessed it by taking off the rear wheel and removing the plastic panel in the wheel well(to the right looking at the car).

I ended up using 1/4" and 5/16" I.D. fuel hose(not the stuff for fuel injection) to replace the dry rotted ones on the car. That stuff is pretty stiff, so I had to put a light coat of oil on the plastic lines and nipples(on the canister) before assembling the lines. It turned out looking really good though.

For the small short one on the pressure control valve and T before you go into the charcoal canister....I had to use standard vacuum line from Autozone(I think it was 3/16" I.D.). I'm going to keep an eye on that one, because I don't know how it will stand up to fuel vapors.

Also, if you are fighting a P1441 code, make sure your hoses on the EVAP canister purge solenoid are not reversed. I mistakenly reversed mine and that code will keep setting with them like that.

Thank you everyone for your help. I was able to find it. The code came back but it's the charcoal canister; since the manual says, that it has to be changed every 30,000 miles or every 12 months. The purge valve that I put on new, I put on new hoses around and the smell of gas is at a minimal. However the charcoal canister is next.

Can you just pull the canister out? I took all my evap stuff off under the hood. I have the line that is bundled with the fuel lines just sitting there open. Never ever smell gas or anything

My 1996 Z/28, with 78,000 miles on it, still has the original charcoal canister....

Yes sir.

I wouldn't bother with it unless you can smell gas in or around the car.
