Default Help me pick a DOT drag tire for my 389ci m6

I'm being very indecisive picking a rear drag tire for my car. I was hoping some of you could share your experience and help me out choosing based on my set-up. Here is what I have to work with:

389" Stroker - fully forged w/LE Trick Flow heads, big cam, every bolt on you can buy...car made 461 rwhp @ 6500rpm (HP was still climing - limiter set to 6800- and 452 rwtq @ 4700rpm)
T56 trans w/street twin clutch
custom drive shaft w/1350 joints
Moser 9" w/3.73 gears, locker & 35 spline axles
All suspension - however its more road race oriented - BMR springs, adjustable Konis, Strano bars, all BMR rear

I think it weighs around 3850 lbs with me in it...

Its NA right now but would like to run up to a 150 hp shot of N2O in the near future

I'd like to fit the largest tire I can without major surjery - its lowered and currently runs 315's no problem

What would you choose:
26x11.5x15
27x10.5x15
27x11.5x15
28x10.5x15
28x11.5x15

Thoughts?

Andrew

Just for dome perspective......Our cars are somewhat similar. 3850lbs, 600 or so rw, t56 with street twin, 3.42s in the rear and some suspension but not hard core drag stuff.

I run the old school bias ply ET streets in 26/11.5/15. I drive to the track with these on. With the stick I like it to spin a bit out of the hole. It won't dead hook, or hardly ever, like an automatic car will.
The stick really shocks the tire and I found the "give" of the bias ply worked best. I've tried drag radials and they just spin.
I launch at 5500 rpm, cross the line at about 5500 and have a best 60 foot of 1.57 but mostly in the 1.6s iirc.

Thanks Purple Poncho...I take it you're happy with the 26x11.5x15 MT's? Have you tried a taller tire before or given it some consideration?

27x10.5x15" Hoosier daddys. No wheel well mods needed. You may need to massage the calipers for 15" wheels if calipers are stock. My best was a 1.55 60'. Race weight was 3750.

I have 275/60 ET Streets on 15" Weld RTS and they are pretty much all I could stuff under the car without modifying anything. Didn't have to touch the calipers or run any spacers with the RTS either, perfect fit.

They come super close to hitting, but don't touch anything.

Hoosier QTP 27x11.5x15 if you don't drive it on the street. You can run these without tubes so you don't have to screw the tires to the rims.

So who's got a 27x11.5 QTP tucked? The more I learn I realize that my car won't be on drag radials so this might change my setup for narrowing the rear.

Yes, happy with those tires. I have not tried a taller tire as I was worried about rubbing. I just want to change rims at home and drive to the track.

A racing friend of mine who has a similar motor combo to you (healthy 396 + 150 shot) and chassis combo to me with the exception he has coil overs, uses iirc the 27/11.5/15 inch slick and doesn't 6o foot any better the myself. He does have Some wierd bounce at launch where as I squat, that we equate to his coil overs.

Eh, the majority week say that a drag radial and a 6speed car don't work well together. For the same reason, I'm going to put my car on QTP's.

That usually pertains to those who run either a 16" or above dia. wheel. A 15" DR hooks well. However, IMO if you want to save driveline parts stick with a bias ply and 15" wheel.

Radials don't like clutch dumps Richard. Its possible but its much more forgiving if you pedal a bias ply.

Do a RPM calculation to see where your car will be rpm wise through the traps and pick the tire height based on that. You can get more or less rpm depending on tire height. For width a 275 should be perfectly fine, OP has a 9" and a twin disk clutch so it should be fine on radials.

You are running a good torque arm, yes?

I was speaking from a spinning out of the hole perspective. Controlled spin > john force burnout 3.0 60'

I tried ET streets, DR and the winner for me is the Hoosier QTP, 710 RWHP, 6000 rpm dumps and hook like fly paper...

Meh. 15" DR's get villainized too much by the M6 crowd regarding traction anyway.
