Default 1997 Trans am overheating

Replaced thermostat and installed slp fan switch. Refilled with coolant and purge probably four times just to make sure air was not the issue.
Pulled the fans today and flushed the radiator both ways to make sure it wasn't clogged.

Block tested sat.

Fans are loud but moving air and not just kinda loud really loud.

Is there a way to test the fans to make sure they are coming up to right speed?

When is it overheating? Stop and go? Idle? Highway?

What does the coolant look like in the radiator with the engine at operating temp (thermostat open)? Can you see a consistent smooth flow of coolant with the cap off (leave the cap off for this test, do not open the cap with the radiator hot, start the engine cold with the cap off), or is it bubbling?

What have you recently replaced before this issue occurred?

Read this first: http://shbox.com/1/4th_gen_tech2.html#cooling

How soon does it overheat? How old is the WP and radiator? Could be a WP spline drive issues like this: https://ls1tech.com/forums/lt1-lt4-m...ng-solved.html

It is a smooth coolant flow right until I pours out. There is bubbling. The water pump is new. If I let it get to temp with the radiator cap off it just overflows.
I bought the car like this.

And really overheats if I drive it around the block.

Did you put the spline drive in?

Pull intake tube, drop fans down, disconnect hoses off pump, pull 6 bolts off pump, pull pump. Should take about 30 minutes.

Or you could try and look behind the pump. If you see splines, it's not there.

Wait a minute. If this happened without replacing the pump..... What thermostat did you install? Look there first.

what do you mean it has a "restrictor" in the thermostat housing?

is there a thermostat or some form of washer with a hole in it?

and by "purging" are you using the small relief screw on the thermostat housing to "purge" aka bleed the system?

How do the spline look? Is the o-ring still there? Now would be agood time to repace timing cover seals and clean out the opti too. How's the cap and rotor look?

If you're taking off the radiator cap you're letting air back into the system.

Default Hi

Hi, okay so I’m having the same problem with my 1997 Trans Am Convertible and haven’t been able to find anything that would cause it to overheat. We replaced the whole engine, the radiator, and a couple of other things.
Driving around, as long as I don’t push on my brakes, I’m fine The heating stays below half and that’s fine with me. The engine doesn’t cool down when it starts to get hotter and now my car is just an ornament in my garage.
We even replaced the gasket and it’s now been about a summer and a half and I haven’t been able to drive it because it gets too hot. Does anyone know why or what I can do to stop it?

Have you confirmed both radiator fans are working? T-stat works? There is also a specific way to bleed the coolant system which requires using the bleeder screws. You can do a search on this forum to find out how. The reason it's overheating is due to is air in the system, and/or it's not flowing through the radiator correctly and/or the coolant is not being cooled once in the radiator. Do you know how many quarts of coolant you poured into the engine once you changed it out? The system holds 16qts IIRC. With what you describe it almost sounds like a fan issue.

Make sure that the 2 tiny hoses at the top of the radiator by the neck are not switched.

Urinate into the radiator.

Sounds strange.....but it works!
