cost to have a shop build a motor(estimate, guess)
i just got this car, bone stock 95z28 a4. My dream for it would be a forged 383 with a big shot of n20. Any one have a price guess on what something like that would cost? Letting a shop do all the work.. of coarse a bigger cam and ported heads. lets not figure on the cost of aftermarket heads. I know i would need a new rear end, tranny, etc. Im just talking about the motor currently. Im trying to figure out what i want to do with this car. Ill probably leave it stockish , until it gets built. if i go that route. I just want a strong, reliable motor, that can take n20 and beg for more

For the complete long block, I'd figure around $8k for a forged, nitrous-ready 383. This would be a motor capable of 450-480rwhp NA with ported GM castings from AI or LE, an aggressive hydraulic cam and quality valvetrain.
This doesn't include removal or reinstallation in the car, tuning, or any of the supporting mods or bolt-ons you'll also need.

That's if you want Karl to do the whole thing intake to pan. He only charges $750 labor for the shortblock alone which is pretty typical. Labor and machine work on mine came out to around $2k but a good portion of that was from the 4 bolt main conversion.
If your power goals are modest then stick with a low mileage junker motor.
