Just bought a 1994 Z28 need help
hey guys just bought a 1994 z28 and i have some questions maybe i could get help with
1. trans wont go in reverse slips really bad doesn't want to shift and makes a woooing noise,
i did a trans service on it but that didnt do anything.
2. when i rev it or floor it revs out nicely to about 4500 then it almost sounds like a rev limiter and backfires and crackles.?
seems like ignition, but might be valve float? has 198k on it. any ideas for these problems?

one thing at at time, first off you need a trans rebuild for sure, and a convertor, now is the time to think on the converter if you plan on camming in the future, after you get the trans working properly the start the diagnosis on the motor, probably do a basic tune up, plugs, wires and may only need a cap and rotor on the opti.

1. get transmission fixed...likely needs rebuilding
2. At 198k mi and if motor is still stock (has not been rebuilt) the valve springs are way tired and need replacing. Tune up including at least a new cap & rotor if not a new Opti are also possible issues
you should also confirm your fuel pressure is good WHILE AT SUSTAINED WOT run...if it is low due to a weak fuel pump the car will lean out and fall on its face at higher RPM's...and backfire ....which are the symptoms you describe. It can still be ignition related (Opti) but you need to confirm your fuel pressure is stable/good

Thanks for the input guys, i found out the engine will break up in neutral and drive but in park it revs to like 6000rpm. im gonna pull the trans next week with a buddy and see what it needs, prob a rebuild kit and sun shell.

get the tranny fixed and move on to the motor....may be ignition or fuel related and certainly valve springs if they have 198k mi on them

1) Transmission def sounds like it needs a rebuild.
2) Opti needs replaced. I've had my car for over a decade now. I'll never waste money throwing cap and rotor at it. With such a high mile motor, save your self some cash, spend the coin on a good ACDelco Opti and be done with it. About 3 hours in and back out to replace, up to 6 if you never worked on the car before. Also, the other suggestion I see getting tossed out is ICM. Never seen one of those go bad to date either. Opti problems can present with or without setting a code.
