What should i do? Can't decide.... So, i just found what seems like a really good deal. I've been looking for a second LT1 to build up while i drive my current motor to hell and back. In this search, I've come across a single owner 95 Formula. LT1, Auto, darkish blue, all original. Says it's been sitting for 6 years and won't start. i just went through all of this with my 96 and got her running good. So, i know i can get it running, but just wondering if i should invest in it. I've been reading the OBDI cats are easier to tune and work with in regards to emissions. But i could also gut it, and part it out while keeping the motor to build up for my car. Could essentially get the motor for free and in theory help out other Firebirds by giving good prices on parts. Something many don't understand in Houston. Well, what should i do? Get the car, or pass and just find a motor to rebuild? if i get the car, should i part it out, or restore it? |
If you don't know already, parting out and selling is a huge undertaking and extremely tedious. If you're willing to put in the time needed then go for it. |
If you got the funds, buy it and part it out so you can work on your motor |
If you are willing to invest an hour into taking a fender off, another 20 minutes to box it up, 20 more minutes to drive to UPS and ship it - for $100, then have at it. For me, my time is worth more than that. As SS RRR said, parting a car out is a huge PITA unless you're going to park it somewhere and have people come and pull their own stuff off the car. Even then, you'll still need to sit there while they work to ensure they don't run off with a hood when they've paid you for a fuse box cover. Get the car for cheap enough, and get it running. If the engine/driveline is in good nick, you could turn a nice profit just on that. Or keep it yourself. There are loads of (allegedly) rebuildable LT1's on Craigslist for $500 or so. Even a few on eBay. If you're in the market for an engine, then I'd go that route. Edit: Here's one for $300 on eBay, complete, with harness and PCM Edit 2: $400 complete, running. In Houston. LT1 running, $250, in Baton Rouge |
I've parted out quite a few cars. I do package deals, large groups of parts. I do that to cut down on the clutter, let the extra bullshit parts be someone else's problem. I've done 2 camaros, 4 different 3rd gens, and a few 2nd gens. Parting out is not am issue for me. if i could get it for a good price, i could essentially get my motor for free, with money on top. I've seen some of those LT1s, and have been trying to talk to some people with them but they never get back to me. all the damn time, people on Craigslist flake. well see. I'm meeting with him Saturday. |
I would restore it. I enjoy project cars that I can tinker with and get running on my own while I already have something to drive. I've always wanted a firebird to play with but unfortunately can only find Camaros around here |
