Default LT1 water pump front cover removal

I'm going to have to change the water pump on my '96 Z28 as it has started to seep coolant from the weep hole.

I've purchased an AC Delco replacement and I was thinking that I would like to polish the front cover. Does anyone know what would happen if I was to either loosen the bolts that retain the cover or remove the cover entirely? Am I likely to create a problem? Stupid idea?

Thanks,
Jon

the cover does just come off when you remove bolts. There is a large "O" ring. You can re-use

The GM part # is 1012-8329 for the "O" ring if fir some reason you need one. On a new pump that O ring should be fine

You have to loosen all the oil pan bolts in order to get the timing cover off. The bottom of the timing cover is grooved and fits onto the front of the pan. You also must be extremely careful as to not rip the oil pan gasket when separating it from the timing cover. If it does tear you can always use sealant on the tear and wait for it to cure before starting the engine. Unless the car is of showroom quality, I would just leave it be if it were me. Since it's buried under the w/p and opti, you can't really see it and to maintain a polish finish would be a huge PITA.

^^,...I believe the OP is asking about the WP front cover...not timing cover.
