Default 4.10 or 4.30 gears for m6

I will be buying a 9" soon and was wondering what some of your opinions and recommendations are for which gears to get. Its a N/A car in the neighborhood of +-400 rwhp. Its a street/strip car that I only drive on the weekends so not worried about drivability.

thanks

4.10 is MINIMUM for a multi-purpose M6 car.
For your stated use, I'd go 4.30's. You'll get better and more consistent launches at the strip with less clutch abuse. IMO, driveability will not be compromised at all.
For us B-body fat cars, 4.56's are the all-around best gearing with the M6..

If you want the best performance for 1/4 times then figure out where your power peak is on the RPM band and go from there.

Yeah......get at LEAST 4.30's with your M6 if it's a weekender.

Good plan. Especially with that high winding 306 cam.

Suh dude

Rather than guessing, use a calculator to figure out what mph/RPM you'll see at the end of the 1/4 in 4th gear. You don't want to go with too short of a ratio and shift into 5th before the finish line. Also, plan ahead. If you decide to amp up the power (e.g. spray) in the future it will change everything.

Use the calc at the bottom:
http://www.csgnetwork.com/multirpmcalc.html
4th gear is 1:1
Shift point?
Stock tire diameter or 26-28" slick? (slicks can grow at high speed)

Going on about 2 weeks on my S60 with 4.10s. I drive 88 miles a day round trip and 70% of my travel time is on a highway, cruising 80 mph. Saying that, I love it. With the factory tire/rim 275/40/17 I cruise at 2100 rpm @ 80 mph. When I not on the highway crusing around 55-60 mph, Im not in the inbetween shift of 5/6. Couldnt be happy with 4.10s with the amount of driving I do.

Where's power peak? If you don't know, put the car on a dyno. What size tires will you run at the track?

HWY mileage suffers a bit....about 17mpg at 70 MPH. But I really don't care because I have 'RIGHT NOW' throttle response!

It's a 4200LB beast with just short of 500hp at the wheels, so I wouldn't expect Honda-like fuel economy.

Remember that some people might not ever take their car to the track. And that a 28" slick will cut down gearing A LOT if they do. I'm intrigued by 4.30's as well.
