smoking or steam from under hood

i have a 1984 cadillac fleetwood brougham d'elegance and i went got a new battery got it started when i was moving it out of the garage didnt struggle to move but it run for about 3 mins max i cut it off and it started teaming or smoking cant figure it out and i smelt antifreeze any clues i was thinking along the lines of thermostat

Could be oil smoke, When some cars sit for a length of time oil will seep out of the valve covers and onto the exhaust manifolds. They will smoke when first started until it burns off.
If it only ran for 3 minutes that wouldn't be long enough for the engine to warm up enough to tell if the thermostat is good or bad.

Ok first you need to provide more details.

When was the last time it ran before you put a new battery in?
Is it an LT1 that you swapped in, or did you post in the wrong section?
Did you drive it, or just move it out of the garage and back in?
Did you watch the temp gauge, and if so, what did it do?
Where was the smoke coming from? You said under the hood in the title, but where under the hood?

Without any of these details, you can't expect anyone to be able to help you.
