Default F'd Up Hub Removal

I unbelievably made a simple yet seemingly huge mistake. I put a 1/4 extension in in place of the hub bolt to use with the puller to get the hub off Apparently, the extension wasn't long enough, so I basically pressed the extension into the hub and it won't come out.

I've got a Lunati Sledgehammer crank behind there, so I also don't want to mess that up. I'm out of ideas, and I need this off tomorrow. Please, any help would be awesome.

Good ******* job. Not sure I would have told anyone about this if I did it though.

You could turn a pair of vise grips into a slide hammer. Just replace the adjustment screw with all-thread and get the slide from an actual slide hammer.

Eh, I'm not worried about anyone talking ****. Much more concerned with getting this out.

Interesting, I haven't seen that combo before. What would I leverage the puller against though? The grips would stick out far past the edge of the hub .

Just clamp the extension in the vice grip and hammer away. Then pull the hub off like normal.

Try drilling it and use an easy out to spin the extension out of the crank hub?

(don't feel to bad, I did the same thing although I stopped before I mangled the extension )

I did this in my youth lol. I drilled it as said and got it out... You'll probably need to chase the threads. Good luck

I figured it would strip the threads on the puller before doing that kind of damage to an extension. Yeesh...
Next time use a 7/16" course (I think that is the crank thread size anyway) Grade 8 bolt that will thread into the crank snout, bottom out and be long enough for room to pull the hub. I think 3 1/2"? Or you can buy an assortment. Your threads may be alright since it looks like the blocking point was the hub itself and not the crank.

So it figures my drill just died. 😂 I was going to try and drill a little to get an extractor bit in there.

Take your time... and be careful putting the hub back on. Get a threaded rod. Don't pull the hub back on with a longer bolt a threaded rod will put the stress on the rod not on the crank threads... after this I put a keyed hub on.

Autozone has a Blind hole puller # 27128 (red case) I use to get pilot bearings out from their "Loan a Tool" program

You would need to weld the right size nut that would screw onto the slide hammer portion of the tool unless there is some lip the various attachments that come with the tol would work

Harbor Freight # 62601 is the grey case one. Maybe HF also has just separate slide hammers also

You could drill out the mushed part of the extension and see if it comes free from where it is jammed into the hub. If you damage the hub beyond use, you can always get another. Just don't drill into the end of the crank.

FWIW, I use an old, long head bolt with the threads ground down for inserting into the hole to push against.

Crossing my fingers I can get it off undamaged...

I had to buy a new drill. That and an extractor bit got it out. The vice grips couldn't get enough clamping force down in it.

Thanks everyone!
