I just bought a 944 and am swapping an LT1-based 302 into it. Now, I get to hear the LS1 guys **** and moan about not swapping in an LS, I get to hear the Porsche guys **** and moan about destroying the essence of the car, and I get to hear the LT1 guys **** and moan about cubic inches and torque and ****.

You boys getting dirty looks or do you make those heads turn when the car hooks?
Whenever I tell people I have a 4th gen they immediately start talking about the LS1. Then I interrupt them and say it's a LT-1 and they start looking at me sympathetically. Round my parts I rarely see LT-1's anymore mainly LS-1 boys everywhere. I remember the days when I could pop my hood open and people would gasps at the glory of the LT-1.I was proud to show them it's might and glory... now I simply bow my head down. I admit I always had a crush on the LS1 not so much just for it's performance but because it didn't have an opti spark or annoying head gaskets. Like many of you though I have an LT-1 still because I'm a poor bastard and I have to make due with what the GM Gods put in the car when it was born. I now know how those enthusiastic 3rd gen guys felt when they would pop their hoods and enthusiastically show you the TPI.
I remember in those times feeling sorry for them but now I'm the one to feel sorry for. I know LS1 guys think we're eyesores just something for them to point and laugh at when they drive down the highway but I like to believe that the LT-1 even with it's short lifespan is still capable of being competitive in this modern day. I do wish to confess my sins to my brothers here that I have spent nights on craigslist looking at LS1's to swap. I have even done worse and at my lowest point looked as LM7's. I am ashamed of myself. This is why I come here to strengthen my faith.

Still have mine, still runs great, is the only one in my parts like it and it has no problem turning a head. Other than needing a little body work and new paint I can't complain. Sure, if I had more money there's a ton of things I'd love to do to the car but it's still a fun car and it still chops with the best of em at a stop light.

Hmmmm
The **** you want an ls for
Granted they give you 400 hp to start with on some engines and yet they blow up..
If you want race car you build it to be race car...
Lt1s modified can hang with the best of them
A Cooler , aluminum heads that are reverse cool,
24x system and some boost. People make 1000 hp with these motors religiously ... and these parts are some what cheaper then ls crowds.....

I think it's all in what you want. Sure the LS platform has become more affordable, I've passed up so many because they simply just weren't what I wanted. I've had a 96 z28 since high school, the car was less than 10 years old and its all I could afford working part time. As time went on I made more money, modified it into a street strip car, now so more so a strip car with no AC, 4L80E, 24x, roll bar, all noisy tubular suspension and had a spool. It's still driveable but not enjoyable for cruises.
The car has sat for the last 6 or 7 years because of that. BUT I recently bought another black 96 z28 T56 car thats identical that I may put my 383 in and drive the #$@! out of it. Because now that's what I want now. I want the lt1 car for the nostalgia and for the memories I had in it growing up. Not so much because its a "superior platform" because clearly, its not.

But owning an lt1 at this point is about saying you own one. Can an lt1 stay relevant sure it can. Can it keep up with the new big boys sure it can. However it's getting more and more costly to do so. Most cars coming out of the dealer are 12 seconds off the show room floor. You look 10 years back and a NA 383 le2 setup right was a bad b*tch . Now it's a setup that can keep up with a brand new stock 5.0 and with a CAI exhaust and tune you will be lucky to hang with it.
That's why I'm not making a big deal about getting every pony out of my 383 it's for me to enjoy. I spent 12k on my car in the last month to be competitive I would have to go FI and then what am I looking at? 20k? I'll pass.
I'll say this to new cars are so fast out the box and only getting faster that it takes a lot of the fun out of building a car. I wouldnt be surprised if we see a 11.5 base model v8 in the next 10 years.
