Default Cam Question

I recently purchased a Comp Cams 306 for my 96 Trans Am. I bought their recommended valve springs 986-12 and now I found out the heads need to be machined to use their springs. Is there any other options for me??? I haven't had any experience in this area. I wish the parts guy would have told me that info before I bought them.

Thanks Dan

Don't worry. I used Crane springs with a taller retainer. Machine work for your springs is not complicated or expensive. The cc 306 will be well worth any effort you put in to make it work right.

But the heads need to come off to have them machined don't they??
Are there other springs available with the same specs that don't need machine work on heads??

I dont have the 306 but the 305. I put my cc recomended springs in anyways after asking racenet.net repeated times if it was ok.(even though cc said to machine them.) I have around 5000 miles on the springs with absolutley no problems. With the 306 i have seen the springs break however, from not machining and reving up too high. I am porting my heads soon however and will machine then just to be on the safe side. I would say just pull off your heads since your right there and do a valve job, and machine anyways for the springs. You could even gasket match your ports, and clean up the inside of the heads some. Dont forget to change your valve seals. I hope you have a good tool to install those triple valve springs. I had a bitch of a time and wound up getting a spring installer made by cranecams to do two springs at the same time. If your stuffing the 306 your gonna kick yourself later, asking yourself why you didnt port your heads. Id say swim since your in the pool if you know what i mean. The 306 still works without porting. Good luck to you.

Those springs will fit fine, just get a spring seat for them and slap em on. Mine are the same height, and I have them setup with the seat (.060) and a .030 shim on each exhaust for a little more pressure. (985-16)
