What's it take to build a 396?

I see many threads of 383's, so how are they doing it to build 396's??
OVERBORING ???

ROCNDAV Oct 31, 2005 05:09 PM

You can do it both ways. But if you are going to sleeve it to for a 396, it would make more sense to build a 418 or 427.

The stroker kit that I got fits the stocked (honed) bore and has a longer stroke of 4.125". The 383 strokers have a stroke of 4.00", so the only difference in stroker kits is the crank (and possibly rod length).

I would like to know the same. So do u just use the stock LT1 and put a stroker kit on it that I guess includes a crank, rods etc.???

aggiez28 Oct 31, 2005 05:34 PM

383 iand 396 have teh same bore. 30 over
383 has a 3.75 stroke
396 has a 3.875 stroke

neither one require resleving.

kits usually include: crank, rods, pistons, bearings and rings
make sure you factor in machine work in the price

I think that if you buy a rotating assembly for either 383/396 both fit each other. But im not totally sure.

anyone knwo off hand a ball park of how much to get a block bored 30 over and also get the mains dilled and tapped to 4 bolts instead of 2?

Are you building an LSx or LTx....from your desription you are thinking LSx based motor

ROCNDAV Nov 1, 2005 12:33 AM

Oops, you're right. I answered this thread from an RSS feed, not noticing it was in the LTx Forum.

Why does it have to be sleeved?? does it need to be bored over 60.
and would a 396 be worth the build for a good strong daily driver, thats
not used for strip use, and whats the purpose of a 396, more torqe than the
383 right?? I thought i'de use a CC306 cam.

They were thinking you are building a LSx based motor...you are building a LTx. You do not have to sleeve the LTx blocks.

To get the extra stroke needed for a 396 requires a little more maching of the block for clearence issues. If the pupose of your car is to be a driver I might even suggest building a forged internal 355, and with the money you save get a good set of heads and a custom grind cam to match.
