Default Gas smell and mileage

I have a 94 Z that just turned 146,xxx miles and runs great but every now and then I get a strong gas smell inside the car. It seems to do it when it gets below a hlf tank of gas. I have checked for leaks but nothing and have replaced the gas cap. Also I drive on the highway mostly and can't seem to get more than 20 mpg. I hear of people getting anywhere from 22-26 mpg so what gives. The only thing I've done is LTs no cats, GMMG exhaust and a tune. The rear is stock 3.42s. It has new plugs and GM wires and a GM opti (new) So is this normal??

I think it's one of your emmisions components. Maybe bad cats, air pump, egr, something along those lines.

Same boat here. Not so much when running, but after I shut it down..wow...smells of gas bad. More of a fume smell, than a "wet" gas smell, if that makes any sense. I have not found any gas leaking anywhere. Drives me nuts.

I am ASSUMING: Pull vac line off fuel presure regulator at back of intake on pass side, most likely diapham is leaking and gas is getting in intake through vac line. I would scan for codes.

I have no codes and no emissions. (No cats, egr, and air pump) Been all turned off. For some reason I really notice it either after I just filled it up or when it gets to a 1/4 tank. I have pulled off the pres. reg. vac line while idling and no difference. I was told though to do a smoke leak test in the tank. Possible crack somewhere in the tank filler tube??? I do have 150, xxx miles with the original pres. reg. if that makes a difference??

I've had the same problem. No codes, no issues that mechanics have been able to diagnose. It's not overpowering though.
