Default Gear whine just part of the deal??

Had my 4.10s put in today. Car gets the lead out now, BUT it has a whine on accel and decel. 1st off, my gear guy has tons of experience. Used to be Dealer tech at Chevy and now has his own shop. He has setup numerous other performance rears including his own racecars. So his labor is not in question. He found it a little loud though, so he contacted Richmonds Tech line...told him all his clearances etc. and they said he had it ***** on and that the noise was normal. He insisted to them that is was pretty loud, and they said.... yea.....Normal. The end. I mean if his clearances are just right and the gear company says its kosher...I guess it is? They told him the most he could do is adjust his bl and change the rpm range of the whine. But being his measurments were right in the "Hot Spot" I told him to leave them lay. I guess all is kosher here? Just sounding anyone out on the noise issue....

The noise is normal. 4.10's are a bit whiny compared to other gears, especially Richmonds.

It is nearly impossible to set up a 10 bolt with 4.10's and have it be dead silent, even for the best of the best. Most of the time you will have faint whine on both accell and decell which is completely normal and won’t hurt a thing. Again faint is good, loud aint. If something is set up wrong it will raise its ugly head down the road.

The Richmonds gears are noiseir, but stronger. I run a OEM 2 cut r&p identical to the GM gears. Very faint whine.

The 10 bolt in the f-body’s pinion is so small you get funky acoustics. The overall acoustics of the f-body interior make it even worse. 3.73 gears are better in terms of less whining.

I once had the same R&P out 4 times trying everything from new bearings to different backlash to different pinion depth and nothing made it better.

The funny thing is I can set up a Dana 4.10 r&p in my Jeep and they are dead quiet, works everytime??????????

I am running Richmond 4:10s and only have a very low whine at about 35 MPH. On the highway or accell or decel none at all. This is the 2nd set the first I had issues like you mention because I did not break them in properly and also had the pinion depth incorrect. This set I ran with .002 more lash Gear said .008 I am running .010 and I also went back in after I had launched it very hard a few times and reverified the lash.

when i had my 373's installed they whined on deccelatation i was told this was normal. i had my car at a friends house who happens to be an ex gm master mechanic,he looked at the gear install, tightened some things, and who knows what else, and they are totally quiet.i really think if the gears are done right they shouldn't whine that much, if at all.

I was thinking they shouldnt really whine at all. However, being that my tech gave richmond his measurements and they said he was right where he wanted to be...I would hate to "adjust" anything. He gave them 3 heat cycles, so it was broke in for me. Like I said, they told him he could + or - some bl and get the whine to change in pitch or move in the rpm range more, but not go away. I also got to thinking that the 7.5 is an awful small ring gear, probably really makes the teeth whine they are so tightly spaced on a 7.5. Anyhow, I guess I will not try to do anything else, he said they are meshing just right, so I can deal with a lil whine. I just wanted to make sure everyone wasnt gonna be like oh send your gears back asap. Thanks guys.
