Default Should I go with a different Cam 584/579

Should I go with a different cam, here is the cam I have picked out

what are the pros and cons of having a big cam.... will I get sick of it?is it to much cam for my 383

my heads are ported stockers with a good port job that flow very well.

I want my 383 to be sick with power, but dont want to regret the big cam, will I, or won't I. Will it smoke alot with no emissions, egr, or cat. etc.

this is my cam 242/248 584/579@113'

What is the adv. duration.
If you get the total overlap will tell you how stinky the cam will be.
I would bet the cam will have about 80-85 degrees of total overlap.
It will be stinky.
Depending on if the heads can handle that big of a cam, and the motor, it will rev pretty high with that kind of duration.
My cam has in the range of 55 degrees of total overlap and I can rev mine to 6700, and it is still pulling, it is a 22* and 23* cam with .550 lift.
It will sound wicked, but I dont think the street manners would be nice.
Heads will make or break it.

I would expect that cam to be fine with your 383. I am on stock cubes and run a 230/244 .544/.576@112 (cc306) with a good set of ported stock castings. Are you a m6 or a4 and what gears do you have?

Pros- makes sick power
loves to rev
nasty idle

Cons- depending on your tune you might have a little bucking and surging at really low rpms
not the best gas milage but that isnt why you bought the car so who cares.

I say go for it

Make sure you get big enought injectors, and a killer tune. The tune is the determing factor for driveability.

I have that cam, running it on a stock short block with ported stock castings. I made 385rwhp and have have gone 12.29 @ 110 with my ground wires for my fuel injectors shorted LOL. It has never run right, and I just discovered this last week (the short).

hey "fergymoto"
my car is at GMR as we speak,i'm sure you've seen it if you have been up there within the past year.i'm waiting for them to finish it ,they are the ones doing all the work, did they do the work on yours? If your car makes 385 rwhp, then my 383 should make well over 400 with that cam right?

Yeah I think I did see it up there. I did all the work on mine, but GMR did the tuning.

My car runs like *** with this short, I would probably do 400 if I could figure out where it is and fix it. Keep in mind mine is an A4.

If you have good heads I would expext you to be well over 400. Espsecially if it is a 6 speed?

Why don't you talk to Rick about the cam/manners. I know he is running a pretty big cam on his 383 I thought that it is very close to the same cam. You can get a good idea of it then. I am running a cam close to that size, a bit bigger and with a lower LSA and I can say one thing it is very stinky! It is a really wicked idle and with my LE2 heads it pulls like a frieght train all the way up to 7K. It really does not have the best street manners, it surges quite a bit, but that is why I have a DD

Quick Reply: Should I go with a different Cam 584/579
