396 stroker question
All right this is the deal i really have my eye set on the golen 396 stroker short block. Cause im getting some cash soon so i want to build my motor up cause at 177k shes getting pretty tired. But hers where im wondering cause i want to get the 396 stroker motor and procharge it. cause ill have enough money to get them both. But would i be better off with just a 383? I really want to be in the 10s next year so i need to know if the 396 is worth the money?

If I was in your shoes, i would procharge a 355. That combanation can be NA$TY!

I guess I'll be the odd ball and say its not worth the extra machine work. Your not going to gain alot with the extra cubes. The power is in the heads and cam. Sure extra cubes help but not in this case.

All things being equal, like heads, you will see hardly any peak power difference, but the 396 could peak a couple hundred rpm lower both due to the extra displacement and the higher friction losses with the longer stroke. The 3.3% more displacement could give you about that much more torque, or perhaps 15 lb-ft more at the flywheel.
There is often a lot more hassle getting things to fit with the longer stroke of the 396. Parts need to be chosen carefully. The cost for the 396 is going to be a lot more than 3.3% more than a 383.
With all the right parts, and super heads, a 396 can do 600 hp @ the flywheel with only a light chop at a 700 rpm idle. It ain't cheap, however. It is a fun ride though.
Hey, if you just gotta have 396, and $ isn't a problem, go for it. If you have a limited budget, spend the money on better heads for a 383.
My $.02.

I agree if you are willing to spend the extra money, I would say go with the 396, as far as the supercharging goes, I have no experience with forced induction. but hey it has to be good for the bigger mouse too right?

Well money isnt a problem right now. I told golen engines that i wanted to get a procharger for it and told him what all i had. And he told me that he would put the different pistons in for it so that i could at least run 12 pounds of boost. But wouldnt the 383 be more reliable then the 396 or would it be the same. Im really stuck on that 396 cause theres not alot of people around my town that would have one.

I don't see why the 396 would be less reliable. the bore wear, and rod angles won't be quite as good as the 383, but I don't see it being a huge difference. also, the 396 will peak lower(unless compensated for) and have more mid rpm torque.... if your going for a new short block, why not go 396? it takes all the added stress of building, and clearancing outta it. There is no replacement for displacement in making torque...
