Bolt On's

Ok guys, i am planning on doing some mods this winter and i want to know what kind of bolt ons you got that are making some good horses. I have a 96 SS with ram air, longtubes and x-pipe, stock 3.23's and et streets. I have been looking at a 3200 converter and some 3.90 but i dont know where to go from there. I wont be doing a cam untill i get the converter and gears so throw me some ideas.

*stock ram air sucks, get a CAI
*if you have a automatic get 3.73 gears, if its a manual get 4.10s
*tb bypass

for basics

Sorry there is no way i am gettin rid of the ram air it looks and functions great. And as far as gears go i am wanting 3.90's with a 3200-3400 stall.

C_Rules Oct 1, 2006 02:27 PM

i guess if you want something you're going to feel go with some gears. i have a 3000 stall and its great but 3.73s or a 4.10(since its mostly a weekend driver) would make it even better. u said u want 3.90s is that like a custom gear or something i never really heard of those for an automatic?

id also go with an electric water pump and a 160 degree thermostat as well as a good opti or cap and rotor when you change your cam since all that stuff has to come off when you change your cam anyway. oh and we cant forget about a good tune.

1mean96ss Oct 1, 2006 02:44 PM

Motive makes 3.90's just look at thunderracing.com, and i have a brand new opti already since it went out a few months ago. I already have a full wideband tune with free upgrades for a year.

3.90 is a bad idea for an auto...you dont need them and when you get into the low 11 your goana have to change them again...and theyre weaker then 3.73 and not much of a gain...get 3.73, 3200 stall i get 1.62 or so on motor...
get an electric waterpump...get a 160 stat tune, then weight reduction is your friend

Stock Ram Air on the Camaro is o.k.

Get 3.73's,a Trans-Go Shift kit and a nice exhaust for starters.
Since you have LT's, I recommend Borla or GMMG.

Captainofiron Oct 1, 2006 03:43 PM

you have an X pipe? so you have true dual exhaust with the stock manifolds?

1mean96ss Oct 1, 2006 03:46 PM

If you guys read my first post it says what i have done, and im sorry but i dont feel like spending 800 on a cutout, thats all borla is. My tune is a full wideband so everything is factored in like the thermostat. And as far as gears you might be right that might be too much maybe ill settle for some 3.42's or 3.73's. also i already ordered the transgo shift kit.

1mean96ss Oct 1, 2006 03:46 PM

Once again i have longtube headers with a x-pipe and bullet mufflers, screw borla, 800 bucks for a cutout. i would rather save that and buy heads.

Captainofiron Oct 1, 2006 03:53 PM

oh ok, I agree go with some lower gears and a stalled converter, Then I would say to go with a cam so you can take full advantage of the slippage of the converter

Out1aw Oct 1, 2006 03:56 PM

I'd go with a 3000+ Stall speed torque converter, Transgo Shift kit, Suspension mods if you haven't done them yet (i.e., panhard rod, LCA's, LCA relocation brackets, torque arm, etc.), TA rearend girdle, 52mm Throttle Body, Tune, 160* thermostat, and you should be good bolt-on wise.

I already have the tune and the thermo is set at 170 so i dont need one, as far as converter i want a 3200 or 3400 but im not quite sure how they work, as far as when does it lock up. I agree about the suspension, but that will come in bits and pieces. Also the rearend girdle, as you know 96 SS camaro's had them and i have the AAM on my rearend.

I have 4.10s in my DD auto, its sick.

Definatly look into a stall, i had a 3200 in my A4 last year, was a great ride!

Tony.

without a cam i wouldnt do more then a 3000 stall and 3.73's especially if its a daily driver, its a stock motor so you dont need all that gear or stall

Speed Density Oct 1, 2006 11:38 PM

Stock Motor or not, build for plans in the future.

I drove my car everyday to school, work, and werever i needed to go for 2 years.

4.10s, 3200 stall = great DD.

Tony.

to each his own, its not that either one of us are wrong, i just hate stalls (which is why i have a 6 speed). If your planning for a big H/C package down the road then yea, go ahead with a bigger stall, but whatever you do get a shift kit and tranny cooler when doing it, 2 best things you can do for the tranny for it to last longer.

MrCadillac Oct 2, 2006 07:33 PM

when was the last time you had a big stall? they have gone light years in drivability over the past few years... but, I'm just asking, not pitching a sale.

not needing more than a 3000 stall, and 3.73's in a daily driver? that is BULL. A few guys I know have that setup with an even smaller B-body stock cam(190* duration at .050). Atleast 2 guys wish they had more stall. Anouther went 4.10's later and couldn't be happyier. And like stated, why buy parts twice? why buy a 2800 stall, just to go 3200 with a cam, and so on. you gotta look ahead. BUT, also note that some stalls flash stall higher than they are rated, by 300 rpms or so, so keep that in mind. BUT, this is IMO.

juicedimpss Oct 2, 2006 09:59 PM

if i were to do things over................

3000~ish stall
1.6 rockers
new valvesprings
3.73 gear is enough for me with a big car, should be great with almost 1000lbs less
with good tires and the right pcm tune it should run 12s pretty easy.
