Default Ported Heads and Intake

Someone asked me for pics of what I did to my Heads and Intake, so here they are. Total time spent on this was about 10 hours.

Did you do that porting yourself, if so was this your first porting job?

Yes, and yes. It might look like **** to some of you guys with C&C'd Heads, but I sanded them smooth, and it works for me. Nothing beats free HP's.

I strongly agree, if only I had a steady hand.

Well how does it look to you guys..lol
No one commented on that yet.
The pattern I used was the Intake Gasket. I traced the overlap, and ground it out. Then sanded it with 150 grit.

No cnc heads here just a local houston porter, true but horsepower is not just simply gained by hogging out the heads and intake, yes more area for airflow is required but the air has to maintain its velocity without turbulance. Did you port match the intake to the heads? In my opinion I would have practiced quite a few times on unimportant heads and also learned/researched as much as possible from other porters before I started grinding away at my heads. But oh well we live and learn, let us know how everything turns out.

Yes, the Intake Gasket was used to trace both and match both. Then they were cut out and sanded smooth.
Yea, I have to see what it does. Alot of people here said the looked good. Even the Machine Shop was impressed.

It wasn't that hard, it's just if you want to invest the time.

What kind of a hp gain can you expect from doing this? (porting intake and heads, making sure they are portmatched)

Also what intake gasket did you use?

From what alot of people say, it's like 10hp. I don't know exactly, all I know is that I saved like $800. I took alot of metal out of them, so I made some kind of improvement. I used a Felpro Intake Gasket, don't remember the number.

A good, well done set of ported heads on a h/c/bolton motor should yield around 30rwhp or so. Thats what I got from mine and my intake manifold and tb are still stock

stupid question but how do you know if each cylinder flows the same? Or that you didnt know it you ported on different then the other, or one is gonna flow more or less then the other cylinders? I guess you dont know unless you get all technical and have them flow tested. Then how much will that effect the way the motor runs if there all ported different? They look good however. And done get me wrong bro, i do a lot of work myself to save some big cash. But IMO i wont mess with my heads. But good luck and let us know how it turns out. Congrats.

I had that question asked before, and the funny thing is that from the Factory each port was a little different from each other. After I got the main cut in, and squared them up, I went in and ground out some more out of all of the Ports at the same time. I did it that way so I can keep my hand in the same position for each cut, so they are very close.
I went in far enough to taper and smooth out the Air Flow. I drew in the area that overlapped the Gasket, cut it down, and cut the rest of the Port out so they are smooth.

I believe for what you are trying to do not bad.
it is just a port match job, not like you went and worked any other part of the head so 10RWHP might be the number you get, I dont think 30 will be the gain here.

Worth trying right, it's just a POS LT1 that most have written off anyway.....
