oil pump mounting

Hi again,
it might be a bad time to ask but are you suppose to mount anything between the oil pump and oil pump mount on the rear main?
when I took off my old pump there was nothing there so when I put my new one on I did not put anything there ( gasket or sealant )

fergymoto 02-15-2007 09:29 PM

That is normal. It mounts right on the rear main cap.

It's surrounded with oil inside and out, so there's no need for a gasket. Just don't forget the windage tray.

Yep no gasket......

I ask a good freind of mine (mechanic) when I was putting my motor together :)

It is a machined surface and doesn't need a gasket to account for a uneven surface.

I'm pretty sure that's the right answer for the wrong reason. Heads, block, waterpump and intake are all machined surfaces and still use gaskets.

Sorry, the minor leak that may occur from this wouldn't be detramental to the engine. But the fact that it has a 7/16" bolt torqued to 65 ft/lbs. should also come into play.

sweet, thanks guys.

You guys have any tips on changing an oil pump?? I started on my 93 LT1 car sunday and we were doing it on jackstands and man there is so much shit in the way you can't get to the bolts on the oil pan. It sux big time.

When you do put the Oil Pump in, set the Pickup in position, and take the time to get it welded to the Pump. Just a little added insurance so it doesn't fall out. I saw a Car the other day where one fell out after a re-build. Weld it and don't worry about it.

If you're doing it with the motor in the car, I have no idea, lol. I'd say use a hoist to pull up on the motor and take it off the motor mounts. Then you should be able to get the pan off and then get to the pump.

Ya and i dont even have a hoist :bang: . I also read that some people drop the K member but i dont know how hard that is bc i have never done anything like that before. All i know is im beginning to hate LT1's

seawolf06 02-19-2007 10:59 AM

The hardest part, to me, is the constant switching between metric and english wrenches/sockets. Dropping the K-member isn't as hard as it sounds.

Well what all is removed in order to drop it? Also is there any pics of how to do this like an install university type thing??

the_merv 02-19-2007 11:57 AM

You will have to drop the K-member to do it.

bjamick 02-19-2007 12:45 PM

aight im not for sure how to do that bc ive never done it before. Which bolts come out and waht has to be taken off?

1997bird 02-19-2007 12:54 PM

I would get a Chilton/Haynes repair manuel and it will walk you through step by step. They are only about $25.

There's a full writeup on here somewhere. Pics and instructions.
