Insights on a stall
I am thinking of putting a stall on my car. The problem is that I don't understand what a stall really does. I know there is a reason that GM didn't put a higher RPM stall on cars for a reason, so what is the effects of a stall on a tranny. So what RPM stall should (if I do it) I get? I do just as much highway driving as I do city driving. Also would I need a tranny cooler? Thanks in advanced.

A stall allows you to take off from a stop and when you hit the gas(to the floor) your engines RPMs go as high as your stall. I have a yank 3600 and love it, its always worked well and never had problems. It drives like a stock one until you hit the gas and then you really appriciate it. Gas mileage is unchanged and highway driving is the same.

It won't be harder on your tranny as long as you have a good transmission cooler mounted near the radiator. You'll also want a shift kit. How old is your transmission? Has it been rebuilt?

My tranny is not so good right now, I think. It will not shift under full acceleration. I am hoping it is only the throttle positioning sensor. I have had problems out of the tranny before with solinoids and I know it was rebuilt over 3x,xxx miles ago.

without getting too technical, from what i understand a torque converter with a higher stall lets more fluid pressure build up in the converter and , in turn, turns the input shaft of the tranny harder and increases the acceleration.

Great read for understanding high stall TCs and the numbers and terms associated with them.

An Edge Racing Converter runs about $525 and a lot of guys are very happy, probably the most popular brand with the b-body guys. Closest thing to a complaint guys have is they hit the tires HARD as such a few guys have gone back to Yank for a softer launch but still say good things about the Edge.
Now IMO you spend under $500 and you will likely be disappointed.

Well i am not sure what to expect with one, so it will be hard to be disappointed. I am still not sure what it will do to the car and the tranny down the road.

I'll just say that this is one of many areas not to skimp on...A converter can make or break your combo and everything is a combo...Vigilante recommends a converter stall speed to be 500-700rpm below the torque peak of the motor (some go as much as 900 rpm) for a street/strip car...Call a reputable company and get their advice on the proper stall for you combo...All I can say is that I've had my Vig 3600 since 1996 and its been flawless...Best $700 I ever spent...

I just don't want to spend a lot of money. But talking to people on other sites, I am finding out that the more you spend, the better the quality. I just can't see myself spending that much on something that could be detrimental to my tranny since it is not of the best performance.
