230/236 would be the best for the open Exhaust he has,and will get better MPG then the other two and be friendlyer but with a custom you will do even better in both power and MPG
umm....these look so much alike....

#1 to get the potential out of the 847 your going to have to shift at 6800+.
#2 a 2800-3000 stall is too small for the 847, look into something in the 4000 range.
If you aren't willing to do that, then get the gm 846 or cc503, they would be suited alot more towards your goals. I had the gm846, and even that cam liked to be shifted at 6500, but 6500 is alot easier on the motor than 7000.

I just love the sound of the 847, and I don't have to have the newest technology out there I'm just kinda of a old school type of guy. have all the bolt ons except a TB because I won't be making the power it needs for a upgrade. My car has alot of miles and I was going to replace the lifters and timing chain so I thought while I was in there that would be the best time to change the cam. My car goes as follows;
94 Z auto
LTs, no emissions or cats running through a GMMG
SS hood with Ram Air
PCMforless tune
What I plan on changing with the cam swap is a 2800 or 3k stall, shift kit and eith 3.73 or 4.10 gears. Other than that that's it.

I appreciate everybodys input.
That means you should steer clear of older technology. Newer lobes will have less overlap, faster ramps which bleed off less compression, get better gas millage, have better street maners, and have more power in any part of the power band. A 224/230 XFI cam or the cc503 (224/230) would fit your needs perfect.

^^^ I wouldn't go bigger then the above mentioned if your staying stock. anything over 230 in duration you would have to start modifying ur stuff

there are 2 different grinds on the 230/236. One is extreme energy and the other is XFI. The difference is the lift

I'd stick the 847 in and get it tuned and see if you like it.

I have had a 847 fo a while and DD it. My Dad(65yr) drives it as well as my Mom and my wife none have ever had an issue with it.

There might be 5-10hp to be gained with going with a custom, but is it worth it to a car that never goes to the track?? Not IMO.

Some of the smaller cams listed here might be a better choice but not worth the money to swap to IMO. I'd run it and see what you like.

I ran mine for a year and half with a 2800 stall(still have it) and 3.23's. My stall was too tight for the track but just right on the street, I have since swapped to 4.30's and with the 2800 stall it works pretty good although a 4k would really wake it up.

Just some ideas.

If he want´s off the shelf with a rough idle similar to the gm847,but just a little less and better for DD

He should just go and ask an engine builder for advice, like Harold at Port Pros
