4.10's with a six speed question

Hey guys i was wondering what kind of rpms you are running down the road at 75. i was also wondering how much you guys like these or if you would of went with a different gear. Thanks

Hackscamaro Aug 9, 2007 10:39 PM

also my car is a 93z with the M29 tranny if anyone has these gears with the M29 your input would be greatly appreciated

seawolf06 Aug 9, 2007 10:52 PM

With 4.10's you should be turning about 2k RPM. You'd be turning less if you had the later tranny with the lower overdrive, but not by much. The 4.10 gears make 5th and 6th gears a lot more useful.

is it any rougher on your rear end than stock 3:42's?

It can be, at least thats what I was told. The shop explained because of the steeper gear angle is more prone to chip. He said just be careful doing burnouts.

I have been running mine for years now, but I don't rev and dump too often. I do haul ass, but just don't launch violently. When I get a 9 inch, I will beat it up with some slicks.

ele-blue95 Aug 10, 2007 12:13 AM

You would be running around 2000,2100 rpm. At 85mph you are around 2400,2500rpm. I love mine. and i still get 26-27mpg driving 85 with the A/C on.

I'm really interested in a gear swap for mine as well. I have a M6 with the 3.42's and keep thinking 3.73 would be enough cause I'm worried that the 4.10's would eat up the gas for a car that is 99% of the time street driven. Any thoughts on that? You guys that made the switch and still drive the car all the time, hows bad did it hit you in the wallet?

Also, how bad can it be, dumping the clutch with the 4.10's on street tires? I woudl think you would just spin like hell.

LT1MAN Aug 10, 2007 12:33 PM

its really not that bad on gas, i love the 4.11s in my 12 bolt. wouldn't run anything lower now

BlackScreaminMachine Aug 10, 2007 01:07 PM

With a 02 m6 tranny the tach says 2k, I wouldnt want to go any higher. 93 trannies have steeper gears but I think the O/D are the same, but you would have to consult a tech artical.

Vicious95Z28 Aug 10, 2007 01:13 PM

Love em in mine, contemplating going to 4.30's when I do a 12 bolt. I like steep gears.

camar0corey Aug 10, 2007 02:31 PM

They are great. Low 2k for 6th gear in the 70-80 range. One of the funnest mods you will do. I put it in 6th with them just cruising around town, so you aren't going to see a 5 mile per gallon loss or anything. I've taken it on a long trip with them, didn't notice any worse gas mileage honestly.

seawolf06 Aug 10, 2007 06:09 PM

The steeper gears are usually weaker because there are more teeth needed to make the gear. More teeth means that each one will be thinner, therefore weaker.

The gear change won't change your mileage at all. All of the burnouts and fast takeoffs that you'll be doing while enjoying your new gears are what will kill your gas mileage. ;)

Going from 3.42 to 3.73 wouldn't even be worth the money, IMO.

streetwarrior96 Aug 10, 2007 07:21 PM

80 mph @ 2000 RPM

I have a 93z with the M29 and O.D. ratios are diff. than later models. .80 5th and .62 6th vs. the later .74 and .50. (I believe) I now have 3.73's and at 80 I am about 2300-2400. The M29 with a 3.73 is similar in overall ratio to a later version with a 4.10. I have thought of going 4.10, but don't want any higher revs on the highway. 3.73's work great. I also had 3.42 for a while which would be close to a later version with 3.73's. Only thing I don't like about the M29 is the gear spacing. The 94-02 versions were a closer ratio 1-4 than the M29, maybe due to CAGS.

alconk Aug 10, 2007 08:35 PM

What about the A4?? How steep could you go with that tranny? I was going with 3.73 but all you guys love the 4.10 so now I'm thinking about the 4.10 Sorry, I didn't mean to hijack this thread.

ZONES89RS Aug 11, 2007 12:51 AM

Generally they say 4.10 for M6 and 3.73 for A4.

Scrapin'4.8 Aug 11, 2007 09:13 AM

4.56 here...but i have the 8.5 rear in my caprice, lil' stouter, and i need that gear to get the yacht moving. but i turn around 2200 or so at 70 i believe, it's been a while.

hyperzone Aug 14, 2007 04:18 PM

Anymore opinions on the 4.10's vs. 3.73's in an T56? On here, sounds like most people lean toward 4.10's. I've talked to a few people in person about it and they say 4.10 will be to much and that my 1st gear becomes almost useless and the 3.73's would be better.

phantomLT1 Aug 14, 2007 04:27 PM

All This Depends On Your Goals For Car?

I LOVED MY 4.10 GEARS IN MY 10 BOLT . IT IS PERFECT FOR 6 SPD.. I WOULD NOT WORRY ABOUT GAS MILEAGE. WHOEVER BUYS MUSCLE CAR OR BAD STREET RIDE FOR GAS MILEAGE ANYWAY :gtfo: YOU SEE IF I WAS GOING TO HAVE AN ALL MOTOR MAYBE SOME SPRAY I WOULD GO FOR 4.10 ON 6 SPD. BUT IF YOU EVER PLAN ON BOOSTING IT 1 DAY LIKE I AM GET 3.42 OR 3.73. I JUST GOT 12 BOLT AND I PUT 3.90'S IN IT I THINK IT IS JUST LIL 2 HIGH FOR BOOST BUT IT IS CLOSE ENOUGH.

I have had both 3.73s and 4.10s in my M6 and if you go with the 3.73s you will not be happy. Just want you to know from someone who has been there. Did the people you talk to in person have either ones?
