What starter y'all use? Ok what starter do you m6 (t56) guys use on your high compression and big torque cars??? I have broken a baker's dozen. I've bought a "3hp" high torque stater and it wont fit... So if any of you non-shifting guys want one I got one for cheap... |
have you tried to shim it? if you are buying rebuilt starters , they have been decked a little to true up the mounts, if needed. if it sounds like its binding up and trying to turn over but its not, it needs to be shimmed. i am in the lower 12's on compression and i use a rebuilt starter without any issues. thats after i broke the head off of the 1st one lol. it uses straight shims that come in packs with all different thickness of shims. |
I've tried shims as well and it hasnt helped. Where did you get your starter from? I'm thinking the ones I have been getting are just rebuilt cheapos after all I am getting them from the zone. |
lmao thats where i got mine from. is the tranny out of the car? if so and a friend can bump it over while you watch the contact patch of the 2 gears. |
The stock mini-starter that are ON our cars, are the same as the Mini-Torques. I bet they pull the same tq as those high dollar aftermarket ones. My friend uses these minis on all his Chev projects now, on all engines old and new. It's very apparent they are more powerfull than the old school big ass one. They spin over motors much faster, and that's why they used them on our LT1s because we have quite a bit of compression. |

Formula no offense but the starter on the F-car and B-cars is far from mini if you want to use that word. If you're looking for a starter to handle more compression, look into the LT1 Y-body Starter. That's not what mine looks like. Mine is tiny. I worked at an auto parts store and all the starters for F and Y bodies didn't look like that one. They all looked tiny and the only difference was the bolting. Diagonal or straight across. I'll go take a pic of what I'm talking about. I have one int he garage. |

I think I'll try that starter you have there buffman, its worth a try anyway. Anymore details on how it hooks up vs a typical starter like you have pictured below? As far as you jason, you might have got the good one out of the bunch. From the 13 that I have got I could def. tell a difference in each ones quality. The one I had on the car that lasted the longest was a much nicer reman vs. all the others I've gone through. |
projekt70chevelle, In my exhaust video you can hear how easily the starter rolls the motor over. Many many guys buy the vette starter. Like I said, I'd buy an AC DELCO unit any day of the year, but GM charges $225 for one nowadays. And there is no warranty. Formula, I think at one point the y-car starter might have been superseeded(sp)with perhaps the one they used in the 96 Grand Sport LT4 Vettes. But Im not sure if they got a different starter or not. All I know is that's the current Y-car starter. |

Ah I see. I thought you were implying THAT was the F and B style. Correct the SECOND pic is what I have, and what we use due to it being actually pretty damned powerfull. I'll now take note of that Y-Body style you posted earlier. |
