Default What is required to swap in a LS1 rearend?

My buddy has a 02 SS and it is a fully built 10 bolt with 4.10s, this as you know would be way cheaper than buying a ring and pinion since he is asking 100$ What has to be done, anything or a few little mods?

as far as i know, a 10 bolt is a 10 bolt. suspension and torque arm and all should bolt right up. you will however need some of the parts for the brakes unless he's giving you the ls1 brakes still on the rear.

Yea, the brakes is what i was really talking about. Will they all just bolt into the existing setup on my car? I hope i dont need to swap any new hoses or anything.

use the backing plates off your old rear end then obviously your brakes wil bolt right up. fourth gen rears are all the same, with the exception that 99 up got a zexel torsen diff. and of course the different gearing options. A 3rd gen 10 bolt on the other hand will bolt up but is wider I think.

As far as I know..the Axle Housings are identical, even the 4 Bolts that hold the Rear Calipers on.
You want your LT1 Brakes back there..you have the clearance for the 15" Drag rims..

with ls1 backing plates you cant use lt1 brakes...youll have to use his calipers or swap on your backing plates...e-brake cables are differant and the main brake line is the same
rotors are differant..

they will inerchange but the 3rd gen is 1.5 narrower per side then the 4th gen. I have a 4th gen in my 91 so i dont have to run spacers and can run 4th gen ZR1's

I swapped a 2002 rear onto my 95 Formula. I did not have any issue with the ebrake cable. I did not receive any brake parts or the backing plate on the new rear, so I had to reuse my 95 backing plates and thus stick with the original calipers. Probably due to pulling the axles in order to swap the backing plates, I needed to put on new bearings, but that was cheap.

You need to be sure that the new rear is TCS (or not), depending on your car.

One minor issue that I ran into was that the new rear was slightly different length with the LT1 backing plates installed, so I ended up having to space the rotors slightly to prevent them rubbing on the calipers.

Everything else bolted right in place. Get your PCM programmed to correct the speedo with the new gears.

i put a 10 bolt from a 98 into my car(96). i had no problems except for where the brake lines run along the axle tube, the lines didnt fit into that tab. other than that it was a breeze.
