Are the Comp Bee Hive Springs still crapping out on people? - I know that alot of you guys who switched over to le2 or just even put a cam in your car had issues with these breaking on you due to the change in materials used to make them. . . .did the manufacture fix this issue or are they still crappy? - if so what would be a good warning or a better brand to buy from?

I have the 918's. No problems yet, but I've only made 4 passes on the motor and not many street miles after break in.

Did you ask Lloyd E about it cuz it seems that as good as his name is he would not want it to be ruined over using some crappy materials, or just to see if he has had any more problems with them.

I know they just redesigned the 918's for a bigger lift too. I dotn know if they changed the material on them but they do have a different finish so they might have.

I am unaware of any of LE's setups having failure problems.....I do know of alot of hoem swaps that ran into problems mainly because the install heigth required for the 918's is 1.8 and the stock springs are 1.785, close but not close enough especially when using a high lift cam.
To back this up I asked both Comp and PAC about their products inquiring if PAC indeed was the previous supplier that made Comp Famous for the 918's and if the materials and manufacturer had been changed. I got no reply via telephone, e-mail or fax back from either company.

Not to get off the subject but what does PAC stand for? And whats the price of there beehives?? I see a lot of posts about there stuff but i don't know anything bout um.

I have a set of the new 918's that comp sent me for warranty. The finish and the quality of the wire is much improved in the new ones. The original beehive was set to have the new "improved" lift capability anyways. Its actually still a bit conservative imo but people dont ever do anything silly like place the spring in a vice or a spring tester and find out where they really bind. Also imo if you measure every spring and all clearances they're of best use set .060" from coil bind but you have got to measure absolutely everything.

Also, if you actually weigh the available retainers and locks, the 7* steel setup is within a few grams of the 10* ti setup, and steel has a much greater fatigue life. Comp has actually started selling tool steel retainers for a few spring setups, too bad they skipped the beehives or it would have been another great addition to valve control.

Pac stands for I believe, peterson automotive company, but I have been wrong before. They have a website that they sell springs through, but your best pricing will come from companies buying them in bulk for resale. I do believe sdparts has some of the best pricing on the 1218 version of the pac spring under thier own name. The 1518 spring though is definaitly worth the extra loot though, it holds pressure quite well under some very adverse conditions, and the spring wire finish and quality is second to none.

I wasn't questioning his work on the package i was questioning the bee hive springs - I remeber awhile back in an old thread someone mentioned they where having issues with them cracking or breaking they had a part number listed with the date they where manufactured. This happened a few months back, I was curious now since i'm a little closer to actually going forward with possibly purchasing this package. . .I wanted to see if this was still a known problem or not - I'm going to go thread diving to find this information too!


In no way am i questioning the work of Loyd as I plan to purchase my stages from him in the future like i said. I just remember a thread about a bad batch of beehives a few months back like i said and was curious if anyone remembered it.

They are back ordered tell the end of the end of Jan. The guy at comp said there were 60k on back ordered.

PAC= Peterson American Corporation

LE now uses PAC instead of Comp.

We made Comps springs until Jan 2006 and they switched supplier. After that we came out with our own brand.

When you buy 918,s you all get the updated ver. they are QUITE nice, and will perform quite well.

Thats what I and others was wanting to hear. Strange that it came from a forum instead of a direct question to the company. In essence your compnay is what made the 918 that was famous and a high quality part!
