Default SES light on with fans?Anyone have a guess?

The car is a 94 Z28 Lt1 with a 6 speed. Car runs good, slight backfire at high rpms but nothing major. My only problem is that when I start the car and let it run for about 2 min the SES light comes on and right after that the fans come on, all of the fans like the temp is high but the guage still reads low.If I turn the car off and restart the light will be off then come back on with the fans just as before.Anyone had a similar problem? I dont have a code reader for this car and dont really want to spend the money on one because I am trying to selll the car and all of my others are OBD2(which I have the CR for)

I appreciate any help I could get. Thanks in advance.

When the SES light comes on, the fans come on when it throws a code. Go to autozone/oreillys/advance auto and they will scan it for free and give you the code. How is backfire a non major thing at high rpms if it happens all the time lol.

I tried Autozone and because it is an OBD1 car they do not carry the scanner to loan out...they only loan out the OBD2.

I didnt say the backfire happens all the time. The car sat for a year before I bought it and fixed it. Its more of a pop...backfire isnt the word and only happens every once in a while.

Certain codes trigger the fans. Call some local garages and see if they can scan your car. Buying your own scanner is always an option.

I'm not sure how much scanners cost, or where to get them. If you have a laptop, I believe you can buy a cable and get some freeware. But I've never done it and can't really provide any details. I'm sure a search of a few sites would turn up some info. I found a garage in my hometown that scanned my car for 25 bucks. I think the dealer wanted 75 or 80.

find a local shop and have them scan it for the codes. If you have a haynes manual it lists all the codes and meanings in there if not then just post on here and you will have your answer

are you sure about the paperclip not working for 94, if it has the obd1 port it should work, in 95 they used obd1 computer with an obd2 port, i believe 94 should work like 93

Yes I am quite sure.

You need to buy a software scan tool to read codes on 94+ models.

This has been gone over plenty of times, try a search.

I live in Riverside...I really appreciate that, thats nice of you but I think I am just going to order a scanner. Never know when it can come in handy. Thanks again for the offer though.
