Default Easy way to check radiator side tanks?

I'm loosing coolant somewhere, and those plastic side tanks seem to be a common problem as the mileage gets up there. Is there a better way to check than just filling it up and looking for a leak?

More details are needed. Are you seeing coolant on the ground? Have you checked all of your hoses? Do you smell coolant after the engine starts to warm up?

I can't tell if the ground is wet with coolant because I don't park in the same place every day and the roads have been covered in dirt and slush. The hoses are going to be what I check first, I just have to get the car back home before I can do that.
