Default Poor Idle after water pump and distributer cap replacement

My car is a 94 Trans Am with about 80k miles to start off. Hope this is the best section to post it in... if not move it please.

My water pump started leaking, and needed to be replaced. My dad gets parts at cost+10, , so he offered to have the distributer cap replaced as well while the water pump was going to be off.

Now when my car is warmed up and idles... it starts to idle very low, maybe 550rpm. Because of this, I assume, it revs up so it doesn't choke out, sometimes up to over 1krpm. I don't remember what the idle used to be, but it used to be great.

Any idea what happened?

My guess is ICM.

The icm is the ignition control module.

Take a look at this thread:

https://ls1tech.com/forums/showthrea...&highlight=icm

I had a problem with my ICM on my LT1 car after I took my supercharger off. This is because with the Vortech the ICM was mounted further from the head and stayed cooler. I fixed it by making a bracket that held the ICM away from the head so it wouldn't get as hot. Might try that, it's easy to get to.

I really don't know much about this stuff which is why I'm asking about it here :o So you think them changing the distributor cap could've caused this?

The opti cap and rotor being replaced shouldn't have hurt the ICM, same with the water pump.

The icm is bolted to the driver's side head. Is there any chance he got it wet when he changed water pumps?

is your car an auto or m6? the stock idle setting on autos is 550rpm. It shouldn't die there unless you have a cam or something.

I am gonna guess he is running mostly stock...a cam shouldn't even make it surge that bad unless it didn't have a tune...

Shop did it... no idea. He said to take it back so he can look at it once we get a chance. But I'm at school so it's difficult.

I mean the highest it's revved was about 1200. But I don't know why my timing would've been messed up :o
