Default Friend looking at a 94z....need help! Im not an LT1 guy

I have a friend that is looking into getting a 94 z28 6spd with 140K miles on it and is completely stock for $2500. Now, I'm not new to LS1tech but i am new to LT1's so when he asked me about the car, i didn't have much to say to him. Is there any concern he should have about this Camaro? Is 94 a bad year for an LT1? is there any oil consumption problems or anything else mechanically there should be concern of. I remember a friend of mine that use to have a LT1 camaro that would always complain about the opti-spark system, what is that? Any information would be great, thanks.

Opti's are fine. People make a big hype out of nothing. Mileage is on the high end but that doesn't mean it won't be fine.

Opti is not as bad as people say they are. The opti spark is the distributor that the LT1 uses. For 2500 I would take it as long as it drives fine and looks ok. Look for any kind of fresh looking oil spots on his driveway and get all up in the engine bay looking for leaks and listen for knocking. Run the car through all of the gears and get on it. If its still on the stock opti it might be ok but it depends. Mine has 134,xxx on the stock one still. 94's were single cat cars and supposedley had 10 less hp than the dual cat cars.

My car has 130k and doesn't have an easy life and still runs like a top. So, the mileage isn't really that big of an issue. The only problem with 94's is really just not having a vented opti. Mine had the stock opti for 122k, then it went out. From what I hear, it's not cheap to replace. I luckily didn't have to deal with it, since it was done right before I bought the car. Just do like nomoneyz said, look it over real good and don't be afraid to give it a spirited test drive to see if there's any quirks that need to be worked out.

My 1994 had the opti go out at 109k. I put a delteq on it and she pulls harder than ever. Just make sure that the car has about 40psi of oil pressure hot rollin down the road, and it at least goes up a little when you get on it. Hot idle oil psi runs 10-25 on all LT1 cars so don't worry about it being low at an idle. In sixth gear at a low speed, get on it really good to make sure the clutch doesn't slip. Sounds like everything else was covered before, I say its a deal if its that cheap.

exactly, hit it right on the head. this is the best thing you can do. and also if there is a way talk to the previous owner/owners and make sure the car was maintained correctly. a well maintained lt1 can last 250k+ miles, so imo the mileage isnt bad as long as the car had the proper care.

What kind of shape is it in? Unless its been in a bad wreck or something it would probably be worth $2500 even just as a roller. If it runs even half decent I'd snag it!

yep, in good condition it would be worth this as a roller, or even decent condition as long as it runs fine.

Unless there's a reason that they're not showing the front, that looks like its in dam good shape for the price! especially if this isn't gonna be gonna be a DD I'd just grab it if it runs at all and figure out the rest later. It's probably not gonna be for sale very long.

looks like a clean car. I would run a car fax but it looks good. From my personal experience there really isn't any difference in years of the lt1. The vented opti came out in 95 but beside that i never worried about the year just make sure it's clean.

aside from mechanical problems I would inspect the rear quarter pannels inside the wheelwells and under the car for rust as I made that mistake with mine my passenger rear quarter was rusting out like a bitch and under my passenger rear seat where the body was seamed together had a rusthole about the size of a golfball with insulaton dangling down from it just watch out with the older year cars

lt1's have 2 problems and 1 causes the other
water pump and opti

of my two '94 Z28s one lived outside it's whole life and had no rust to show for it (and that's IL)

140k is high if you plan on heads/cam, but for bolt-ons and a fun car it's just fine

The pics are low quality so its hard to get a grasp on how it is, is the front FUBAR or were you just not thinking about getting a pic up there?

Also, like has been said check every nook and cranny for leaks or any sign of ghetto-rigging that you can find. I'd look at the undercarriage and if its lowered, the springs. Check for rust and other obvious signs, then give it a spirited test drive.

If it holds up, snag that **** immediately before someone else does.

Good luck with it!

Depends on where you live too though. I do know that New York is a very expensive state to live in, so especially if his car had fairly low mileage and was in good shape, 7500 may not have been so bad. Here (Washington) that would be considered a little high but not ridonkulous.
