Default Anyone rebuild their own T56

How hard is it? I have alot of mechanical background and I have a T56 rebuild manual. Where did you get all your parts? I am trying to save money. I need a new input shaft and want to do a viper output shaft and all new syncros, gears and upgraded shift forks. I am planning on 600 to 700 hp out of a turbo'd 370. Thanks guys.

It's not hard at all, just follow your manual and get some good snap ring pliers. Worst part is getting the 5/6 driven gear off.

i was just going to make the same thred but i figured it was easier to post in here.. i was looking at getting the stage 2 upgrade from tickperformance they seem to have the best price and know exactly what parts need to be changed... is there is a more detailed repair thread then the sticky up top ?

If you're doing the rebuild yourself, don't order any parts until you get everything torn down and inspected. You may need to replace gears that aren't included in "kits".

Its not bad. I've done 4 of them and just like jmm98ls1 said, getting the 5th/6th gear off is the worst part. You just have to get the correct puller.

Make sure you double check your shift fork alignment before sliding the main case over the rails/output shaft when assembling. Good luck.

There's a thread already made on a rebuild walk through. It should help you out. If you're planning on buying all new gears and everything, that's gonna be expensive!!! Good luck man

The little OTC 936 Puller is all you need.

Like these guys have already stated, just have the right tools (snap ring pliers, 5/6 gear puller, and a good work bench) and it really isn't that bad.

Do what the guy in the rebuild walkthrough did and rent an 8 and 6 in. puller and combine them. Maybe some rental stores in your town would carry them.

i bought a puller just like that one, came with 2 sizes of clam shell splitters, i think it was 25 bux or so,,it wasnt very expensive.

I too will be joining the ranks of at home tranny rebuilds, probably this winter if all goes well.

Thats funny because I'm a Cadillac tech also and around here in Orlando people do beat the **** out of their CTS-V's. Mostly differentials and diff bushings.

Weird how we see different things.

harbor freight, came in a red case with 2 splitters, and 3 or 4 per side extention pieces to make it taller, and all the hardware. It was listed as 28 bux, rang up for 25.

WOW, here is the link for it on their website,, now listed as 50 bux,,,,,i guess i got lucky!!!
