My friends early 4th gen trans am, recently lost 5 gear, but every other gear is perfect. does it mean the tranny is need rebuild asap ? thanks

Anytime you run with damage, you risk damaging other good components. It's likely you've got metal in the trans now, and what the magnets don't catch, will eat away at other (blockers, etc.) parts. In addition, if the damaged parts fails catastrophic on the highway, you could risk more than just parts.
