Default Spec + GM Hydraulics = No Fourth Gear?

We were just able to get my car to the track this passed weekend. There was not one pass that I could get the car into fourth gear under full throttle.

When you are just driving around or playing around on the street it will go into fourth no problem. Not at the track though.

It seems that for the fourth gear shift that they pedal disengagement is close to the floor and not enough to fully disengage the clutch. Clutch assembly is as follows:

New GM Master and Slaver Cylinder
SPEC 3+
Dex Merc III Fluid

What would you guys recommend?

do you have the shim behind the slave? my spec had the shim and engagement point was about 2" from the top of the pedal travel.

engagement level is fine when I am not at the track. I do have the spacer in it though.

I am thinking a tick master cylinder may be the way to go.

Sounds like you have some air in the system or the fluid is burned up. I installed a SpecII, a new master and slave along with a Tick remote bleeder about 10k miles ago and I have yet to be locked out of gear. I just bleed and replace the fluids every couple months or if the pedal feels like it's engaging lower. I'm not power shifting/no lift shifting but I also don't fully releasing the gas pedal.

You need to drill your master line. I've been spec bashing for months and finaly drilled my master line. Now it feels 100 % better...

The pedal is alittle stiffer , which I dont mind , but gears go in good. above 5k It would just lock out the gear, wouldnt grind . Just wouldnt go in!!

You can find my thread in here a few pages back.

Even being the "new" style master cylinder setup? I will try it before I spend the big money on the tick unit.

I cant conferm that, In my CTS-V I didnt touch the master, just drilled the line. About 1 inch in on each side the was a huge restriction. biggest drill bit that fit by was a 5/64. I drilled it out to 1/8 inch.

I had bad disengagement issues with my spec 2+ even with the shim and bleeding it every way under the sun, untill I man'd up and got the tick adjustable car drove great after that I know its a little pricey but one of the best mods I've done and its fully adjustable which is great because each clutch setup varies so you can customize it to your style of shifting

I did the drill mod and thought it felt better, But after doing some pulls last night I still had trouble getting into third and couldnt get into fourth at all.

If you are having an issue with the selection of a single gear then this is not likely relative to the clutch and or lack of a shim. It is much more probable that this is related to the transmission. In instances where the shim is left out you will have difficulty selecting 1st or reverse. Under motion though gears are easier to select. It sounds like you are seeing an issue with the 4th gear synchro. Let me know if you have any further questions.

It's not the freaking transmission! It's the clutch! Just accept it! I understand you say it hydrolic problems but you shouldn't have to put a better master in it to make a clutch work. Fidanza twin here I come.

(LOL) Does someone live close enough to Raven to fly by and give him a hug or a "that-a-boy"...he seems a little antsy these days and some positive affirmation just might help! Your good enough, your smart enough, and dawg-gone it people like you!!! (LOL)
Raven I hope you can take this for the joke that it is...

If you feel that you have a clutch issue then send the unit it for assessment...I have made this option clear more than once. I will be happy to issue an RMA.

And since I am repeating myself I might as well make sure other readers understand that normally if there was an issue with the clutch it would affect more than one gear because the clutch performs the same function no matter what gear you are selecting. Just let me know if, and when, you decide to send the unit back for assessment.

As I do my Exedy Hyper twin. Used the same hydros and didn't even use the power bleeder!!! Just hand bled and not a single sticky clutch pedal shift since. Its amazing what a good clutch can do!
