Regrets? Considering A4 to M6 swap
Hey everyone, just wanted to here from some guys who have done an A4 to M6 swap in there cars. Do you ever miss the auto or regret doing the swap at all?
The reason I ask is I have a chance to do a full swap for swap on my trans. Also wanted some advice on if I should do it anyways, it would be my built and stalled 4L65E which has about 10k miles on it for a stock T56 with 140k miles but the clutch slave and master were all replaced a few thousand miles ago.
Would I have any issues with durability? My car was putting 400hp 390tq to the wheels through the auto on a bad tune. Would this be too much for the T56 stock with a stock clutch?
Thanks for the input!

It's funny you mentioned regret. I used to do these conversions all the time....A4 to M6, M6 to A4, A4 to TH350, and so on. About 75% of all my customers would end up swapping back to what they had to begin with. Ironically I'm also included within this statistic..lol
I bought a 99TA back in 2002 which was an A4. I ended up switching to a T56 one year later. Then I drove it like that for one year, then swapped back to an A4.. Nothing like a Yank PT4000 converter!
I always advise against doing conversions, since most people decide to switch back. Even still most people don't listen
Just my $0.02...

The stock T56 will hold your 400HP just fine...but the stock clutch, not for long before it will slip...if you actually drive it, lol. I LOVE driving my T56, but then, i've never driven a stalled auto. M6 if you wanna have fun on the street and stalled auto for the best at the track.

im in the process of doing the swap now. I had an ss 4000 stall and a built tranny and i burnt both up racing and it got to exspensive. Drivability was not to bad but the convertor would not stay locked when on the highway. So i decided that for some street driving, drag racing, and autocross it would be a better choice for me. it just depends what you do with the car. If you race alot an a4 is good for consistant e/t . but m6 is alot of fun and more drivable on the street. This is my opinion only.

It all depends on what YOU like to drive and what you want out of the car. An auto with the right converter kicks major ***, but I'm a clutch guy at heart. I swapped ~4yrs ago and don't regret it one bit.....my car would probably be a bit quicker down the track and more consistent with a th400, but I wouldn't enjoy it as much.

I don't regret it at all, except the cost mostly
probably would have been smarter for me to just sell the car and buy one that was already a 6 speed, but I was too attached

I'm going to be doing a lot of road racing track days this year along with autocrosses and thats why I'm really considering the swap. Plus fun on the street and better MPG.
Don't get me wrong I LOVE my stalled auto but it's becoming expensive very quickly...
Took forever to finally get the tune right after I killed my stock 4L60 and even now with a built 65 2-3 clutch pack is shot AGAIN. Plus I'm spending much more in fuel than I would be in a 6.
I love drag racing and will still take it down the 1/4 any chance I get but like I said I'm mostly going to be doing the curves from now on and really just want something fun for the street.
However, I am VERY worried that after I make the swap that the weak, completley stock, 10 bolt will take a dump shortly after...

It's almost impossible to find a T56 at a junkyard, due to the fact that these trannys are in such high demand. They never even make it to the junkyard. I did find a T56 core from a junkyard, but they want like 700shipped...ugh

I mean I'm not planning on just dumping it with warmed up stickies or anything because I know thats just a disaster waiting to happen...
As far as the fun factor though I'm sure it will be better than my auto I'm just worried about getting tired of it or my times falling way off

you will probly loose some e/t because your not going to 60ft as good unless you get a rearend to handle the launches. It will be better mpg and for auto cross it will be a blast it will challenge you as a driver. There are some cheap upgrades you can do to your t56 to make it handle your hp. But for peace of mind there are hundreds of guys making alot more power than you and beating the pis out of there stock trans and it just keeps on going.

Its hit and miss, I took a gamble and got one off of ebay for $1,300 shipped from Washington State that was in "good working order when pulled". After the swap discovered in 5min that 2nd gear was BEYOND trashed (starting the car in 2nd would result in the shifter ripped out of your hand and into neutral). So $1,700 and a Viper Spec rebuild later....I've never been happier except angry about being taken advantage of in the original tranny purchase. The car feels much more connected to me, and its more enjoyable to drive imo.

I swapped from a stalled auto to a T56 in 05. My car is mostly street driven and seldom raced at the track. If I were running the 1/4 mile more often I would have stuck with the stalled A4 without a doubt.
But when my 4L60E ate it's insides for the 3rd time I went T56 and havn't looked back.

I am loving my M6 from A4 Yanked auto, it has been a year now since the swap and I don't regret it one bit. When you do the swap get everything for swap done such drill mod-adj master cylinder-good clutch- short throw shifter. Don't use anything wearable (used up) item like pilot bearing, clutch, master cylinder.
Oh and uhh get a remote bleeder.
