Don't waste your time. Grab the pedals and wiring and leave the trans. there. The T5 is not rated to live behind a 5.7L LS1 and the V6 gear ratios make it worse.

Yeah I doubt the T5 would be able to handle a V8 for very long. Like jmd said the gear ratios would kill you too.

The V6 t5s are rated as low as 200ft/lbs, it has a BOP pattern bell housing, and I've heard even the trans 4 bolt pattern wont even bolt to a V8 bell housing.

Are the V6 trannies really weak? I was thinking of getting a 3800 car and doing some minor bolt-ons to it and have some fun but I might just got for a Z if the trannies are really weak.

Yes, they are weak.
Get the V8.

In order to create wider gear ratio spread (4.xx first gear in an old 1980s V6 T5 vs. a 2.95 first gear in a 1980s V8 T5 for example,) the gear teeth are changed such that
  • either 1st drive/driven gears are reduced/increased in dia. and tooth count
  • or the main drive (input to countershaft) are modified similarly.
Any time a pair of gears are closer to each other in size, they are a stronger gearset, all else being equal.

I know of someone with a T56 adapted to a T-3800. Anything is possible and adaptable. However, when you can pick up a good used trans. for a few hundred $, it doesn't make sense to spend much more $ adapting something unless the life of it is significantly reduced.
