Loud Scary Noise - Throw-Out Bearing Failure?
I've got a '98 Z28 with T56 tranny (with fairly new Spec Stage 1 clutch) and I'm getting some crazy noise coming from the transmission. It sounds like all hell is breaking loose in there, but funny thing is, it drives perfectly normal. I'm thinking it's a trashed throw-out bearing. Please let me know what you guys think.
Here are the symptoms:
- LOUD grinding / scraping with clutch disengaged. It'll run quiet otherwise. When I push the clutch all the way, after a couple of seconds the noise occurs. Especially if a give it a quick rev after pushing the clutch. Happens whether in gear or neutral.
- If in gear, the speedometer jumps a little as soon as the grinding starts.
- Clutch engages normally otherwise. Shifting seems normal, maybe just a tad notchy when engaging first/reverse from a stop, but barely noticeable.
I thought for sure it's a bad throw-out bearing, but why would the speedo jump with the clutch disengaged? Could it be the pilot bearing instead?
