Default Possible for noob to rebuild?

I have always been interested in trying to rebuild my own t56. Is it even possible for someone who has never been in a trans to do it? I have seen a few write ups and it seems pretty straight forward but I am not sure.

It is something I think I would like to try. But I want to make sure it also isn't just going to result in the trans being shipped to a rebuilder in pieces. I am not trying to do it to save money or anything, I just really want the experience and my T/A needs a rebuild. It is not my DD so it can be down for a while when this happens.

Is there any really good guides or books out there that I should get? Also, where can I buy the rebuild kit that will come with all the basics that need replaced in a rebuild?

I think you should go for it. A manual trans is pretty straight forward rebuild. Just don't neglect the checks like end-play and what not and you will be fine.

I think I am going to. I just need to make sure I have all the tools I need before I start and all the parts. Obviously if something inside is broke I will have to order more parts, but I just need to get the basics for now. Does anyone have a list or kit to begin with? As of right now the Trans shifts into all gear and all. The clutch is getting weak so shifting sucks right now because of that. The only grind I have is if you were in gear and revved it it would grind a little. But it did it once and I have never done it again. The car has 170k on the clock.

Was just thinking about posting the same question. I found a local shop that would do the labor for $400. Now the question is if $400 is cheap enough for me to not get my hands dirty and know it's done right the first time?

Well... for 400 bucks in labor plus parts you might as well send it to Texas Drivetrain Performance... I think they have a basic rebuild for less than $700. I know a few guys that have used them and they have nothing but great things to say.

Wow, that is really cheap. I will definitely have to do some research. I'm still leaning towards doing it myself but those prices are tempting.

Actually the Stage 1 is $540. Of course you would have to include shipping and whatnot from where you are. Here is their site... They are a sponsor here so no worries about posting it. http://www.texasdrivetrainperformance.com/t56.html

Thanks for the link. Btw, a friend of mine bought the stage 2 kit for $660 from thegearbox.org a couple of months ago and loves it. They say the rating is for 600-650 hp so it's a little overkill, but atleast you don't have to worry about the trans when modding the car in the future.

Yeah, I was looking at that kit. And I really don't care about the money to rebuild the trans. I just really want the experience of doing it. I may buy a core to rebuild just in case I f*ck it up lol.

lol well good luck. My trans definitely needs to be rebuilt and I'm just looking for something to do to it during my winter break from college. I plan on purchasing the parts by the end of the week. Post back with what you end up doing.

I am sure I will order the stage 2 kit and do it myself. It will just be a matter of whether I use my tranny or buy a core. I am also going to go with a Monster stage 2 clutch and tick MC... I figure while it is out I might as well do it right. I will also have a rear main for the motor on hand in case it looks like crap. The car has 170k on it so there is no telling when I get into things. Especially since I just bought it earlier this year.

I hear ya. The 99 in my sig has close to 190k on it and the trans is the only stock remaining drivetrain part. I have a newer LS1, monster stage 3 clutch, and a moser 9in. The trans has gotten me into the 11's, but it's starting to grind some gears and I'm almost positive the 3-4 shift fork is bent because it pops out of 3rd gear a lot now.

I didnt rebuild all gears , I bought the tranny for 100 the guy told me 1-4 where good but 5-6 wouldnt go into gear , I opened it up and the fork was broken . Bought a fork and new syncro for those gears . Put it in the car shifts great . So i have under 400 for a t56 .
