Default Searched high and low. Shimming question.

Hey all, just jumped over here from PT. It seems like you guys have alot more knowledge on the t56 then the truck guys. Anyway long story short I want to swap a t56 for my 60e and the one i bought on ebay was mislabeled and came from a cts-v. After taking it upon myself to swap all the bearings and the main shaft for the gto spec parts im finally at the point to check my shims for the new bearings. Well the manual is not really crystal clear and i cant seem to find the proper shim procedure. I was under the impression that after i set up my dial i would be able to move the main shaft up and down by hand but it seems like that is not the case. Would anybody be so kind as to walk me through it step by step? thanks in advance fellas.

Shims removed.
Races in front plate.
Input in. Mainshaft in that.
Countershaft set down too.
Main case on.
Bolts torqued.
Mainshaft will be movable unless a bearing or race is mis-installed.

Yep. You've got 3 outer races and 3 cone bearings there.
How's the countershaft endplay?

i dont know i havent checked it. i guess i was more concerned with getting the main shaft done first but now it looks like i have to tear the whole thing back down again.

Not to thread jack but I'm going to be assembling my t56 next weekend so I've been watching your thread because I'm also curious. One question where do you get the tool to measure it?

do you mean a dial indicator? a cheap one can be had from harbor freight and they are accurate for as cheap as they are.
