I was wanting to know if I could get some help with my transmission I have a 98 ls1 with a t56 and my issue is that I was running in 3rd gear when I wrecked the car and after the car was fixed from the wreck I can’t get it to shift out of 3rd gear and that was the gear it stayed in when it was wrecked so I was wanting to know what could be the problem?

probably a smashed shift key.. Not going to be what you want to hear, but that tranny needs to come out. I would just have it freshened up with a rebuild kit, and of course replace any damaged keys with billet ones if possible.

I did not attempt the rebuild, suspected there was more wrong with my T56 than I could handle. The 3-4 shift key had broke, but I was having issues with grinding, notchy engagement prior to mine getting stuck in 3rd. I pulled the trans and took it to a shop. I had a lot of damage though, apparently the previous owner/owners had run syncromesh instead of ATF. I had to replace all synchros, 6th, 5th, 3rd gears. I also did 1-2, 3-4 shift keys (billet), bronze shift pads, new forks etc...

yeah I might as well just end up taking it to a shop and hopefully get it runnin pretty soon since its been siting for the past 2 years, had to replace the complete front end on it and hardly had any time.
