Default LS7 Vs Spec Stage 1 Clutch

I'm looking into replacing the clutch on my 00 Formula. I been searching on Google for different opinions on LS7 clutches and Spec Stage 1 clutches. Which one would be better for a car that makes around 380-390rwhp? If I go with an LS7 clutch I will be using a stock LS7 flywheel which is going to be around 8lbs heavier than what I have now. If I decide to go with a Spec Stage 1 I will be using an OEM LS1 Flywheel. What would be the better option between these 2 clutches?

You'll get better results here in the M6 forum. If you do some reading, you'll find that most guys advise staying away from the LS7 because of the self-adjusting pressure plate, while some others have had good results with it.

Based solely on my reading here, and not at all on personal experience, I would recommend the Monster Stage 2 or their new LT1-S.

My LS7 lasted about 6 years and 40k miles, then wouldn't shift at high RPMs anymore. The clutch had lots of material left as well. Swapped in a Monster and its been running great. Go for a Monster.

Seems like most favor the Monster Clutch. Would Stage one be enough for 400rwhp? Monster rates it at 450rwhp. Anyone ever tried the Spec? From what I read seems like the spec has more unhappy customers than happy ones.

I was looking at the Monster Clutches but figure why not save a few hundred. But then I also want a clutch that wont give me much problems and last a while. I already have a tick master and mgw shifter which made a difference, mainly the tick mc.

I also believe that oem clutches last longer than aftermarket ones.

I ordered a spec stage 1 clutch and returned it before it even shipped to get an ls7 clutch and ls2 flywheel.

If you search around you will see plenty of information about spec vs ls7 clutches.

I did some searching and found mixed opinions. Some people like the LS7 others like the Spec. I saw a lot of bad reviews on the Spec Clutches. Also read that if you go with a Spec you need to get a Spec flywheel and that would cost almost as much as a Monster.

I haven't found many complains on the Moster Clutches. Only about 2.

There are a lot of happy Stage 2 users at the bolt-on/small cam power level.

When I first got my '98 new and was drag racing, I went through McLeod, then a SPEC 2 & then a SPEC 3, then a RAM and then a LS6 clutch. At some point in there I stopped drag racing, but they all had short lives. I switched to the LS7 clutch kit soon after Gene Culley offer one, then later added the Fidanza flywheel. Once I put in the Tick adjustable master all was golden and it's all I've run since then on my daily driver.

Let me start by saying SNL/Monster is a good group of guys and will help you the best that they can. I bought my car with 23k miles on it and drove it hard on the street and track lots until about 60k (put cam in around 40k). It never really had any problems until I think maybe the slave was going out or something. Anyways I decided to have SNL/Monster install a lvl 2 w/18lb flywheel and I did beat on it plenty and it held no problem at all.
My car is my DD and I stopped racing a lot so the lvl 2 never even made it to the track (just some highways pulls and a few dig races) but now at 83k miles its slipping like crazy.
So my point is the stock clutch got beat on a lot more and lasted longer. Not sure why but oh well, the monster was a good clutch while it lasted roughly 25k miles. I am going to install a LS7 clutch for awhile until I can afford a monster twin disc later on when I actually need it. BTW you can get an LS7 clutch and flywheel very cheap so if you aren't racing it a lot and want to go the cheaper route Pm me and I'll tell you where.

Id vote ls7 for your setup. Im a huge fan of oem clutches if they fit the bill. My stock ls6 clutch held great for 35k miles at 400hp/500hp on the bottle. Ls7 is a great setup.

+1 for a monster S2. Also, they will stand behind their products long after the install. I got a S3 and tick master, and it is the best the clutch has behaved since I owned the car. Been in for 10K, if that matters.

Personally, I avoid anything with an adjustable pressure plate. It leads to the "How high up will my clutch pedal be after THIS shift?" syndrome every time you shift.
