Grinding Noise After Fluid Change - T56
Hello,
I changed the fluid in the T56 today with DEX III (4ish quarts) and it drives/shifts wonderfully, but when in reverse (my driveway has quite a slope), I hear a grinding noise when clutching the car into the garage. This noise wasn't present before the fluid change. The old fluid had just started to present with the old/mildly burnt smell, so it needed changed.
The previous owner installed a Centerforce clutch roughly 10K miles ago. Pulls hard and shifts great.
Any ideas?

Valvoline NON-Synthetic is also my first choice for my T56. Do a search, but years ago, it use to be common practice to also add a bottle of the rear-end additive to the T56 as well for smoother/quieter operation. Do a search and see if that might help your situation...

Much appreciated insight. I chalked this situation up to a cold trans/clutch. I took it out Thursday and drove it a considerable distance, and no noises when backing into the garage upon completion. Might have also been that the new DEX III hadn't yet found it's way into every nook and cranny of the transmission. Problem solved, for now...

I'm using the same stuff (ie aka GM 88861800) as mine is a pre-2001 T56 with paper-lined synchronizer frictions rings. Not yet convinced that trying full synthetics or higher viscosity will provide any benefit...and maybe possible harm. For a 2001 and later there are many more Dex 3 choices that have been proven to work well.
I would never consider adding a rear diff limited slip additive to my T56. Rear differential fluids are fine for high pressure/highly loaded gears....not so ideal for synchronized transmissions. Just because a trans "feels" smoother following adding something new, or doesn't blow up within 5,000-10,000 miles, is no guarantee it's doing a proper job. Most of our cars never get to see enough miles or years to determine how a new fluid really worked out. And just because it worked on one guy's trans doesn't mean it will work on yours. Just so many differences in the builds even if the same components are used.
