Default my trans needed less than 4.1?????

found an old thread by TDP (former vendor) where he mentioned he removes the fill plug and fills until it starts to spill out then tightens the plug up. probably because he had fluid in bulk and didn't individually measure out each quart. anyway, i dumped in 4 quarts, and id say about 5-6 ounces came out. brand new, dry trans. car is decently level. would u tighten plug, buy another quart and dump a little in, or say nah if it came out the fill plug u should be good?

(old timer) "back in my day, we put the car on a level surface and took the higher plug out, then filled the transmission till it just started to pour back out from that hole."

New cars might not like this though. Check the service manual for clarity.

That is exactly what I did. Service says add 4.1 through fill hole. Obviously can't do that if it' coming out of fill hole. Would have to go through shifter

T56 is 4 qts.

On a new, bone dry, fill using the fill hole you may find slightly less than 4 qts fill the trans because the fluid has not yet "migrated" throughout the tranny & case. If the car is up on jackstands just start motor and run it through the gears then check level again. You likely could add "x" oz to top it off.

Filling tranny through top just pour in 4 qts

I might just add like 4-6 oz through the top. Any downsides of overfilling it by a hair?

no...but if you fill from the side "fill" hole and some comes out...it is full (if tranny has been run first)
