Can't put car in gear/peddle is broken

As the title says, I cannot put the car into any gear at all and the clutch peddle is broken.

I can get the car to start, and when it is off, I can move the shifter around. But once I start the car, the shifter will not move, almost like it is in gear.

Also, the peddle is broken. You push it down and it has no feel and when it reaches a point near the bottom of its travel, it stops and you need to pull it back up, it will not go back up by itself.

What is the problem here? I am thinking slave cylinder or master? How will I know for sure before I start throwing money at it? There is no cable that could be broken, or something else that is easy to fix, right?

Thanks!

I don't have an easy answer. It could be a few different things. If the master cylinder is full of fluid, I'd say it's time to pull the trans and have a look. That won't cost $$$, just some labor. The problem may be apparent once you have a look.

Unfortunately, it's probably going to cost some $$$. Once the trans is out you may as well replace the hydraulics and clutch unless it's fairly new.

Ok, well I have not checked the car yet, but I can get it into gear and drive it...the engagement point is significantly lower and about 1/2 of the peddle seems like I am just pushing a peddle connected to no where. It does bounce back, too. I did nothing except try it again.

I drove it around the block, was able to get it to start flawlessly except that the engagement point is lower. I was able to get it into 2nd gear as well. Could this be just a broken peddle that is not fully connected anymore?

It sounds like you have a hydraulic release system problem Air in the line/ no oil or a prob with eithere the slave or master cylinders. If you have fluid in the system and have bled the air sufficiently, the pedlde should return. With you intermittant work/ not work, I would look at the fluid/ fluid quality and air in the system. It should not get you into alot of $.
