Default 3rd gear synchro just went in my Z06

Well.. long story short..

I popped the 3rd gear syncrhos in my Z06 on the weekend. Grinding going into 3rd if I go anything over ~10% throttle.

How much can I expect to pay to fix this little accident?

Car is barely modifed (exhaust) and has around ~35000 miles.

Thanks guys

I'm about to attempt my own rebuild this week. I remeber everyone telling me how hard the 700R4 was to rebuild (back in my 3rd gen days) and It wasn't bad at all.

You may need to make a jig or something to hold the tranny (workbend with a hold for the input shaft to fit in. I'm a cheap bastard and also a curious one, so I always try to learn how to do something, so if it ever breaks again, Im that much more familiar with it.

Back in my 3rd gen days, we didn't have the internet and bitchen tools like LS1Tech (yes, I consider it a tool). I have found some pretty detailed T56 rebuild threads. I have opulled mine apart, and the only tools I needed was a Socket Set, Breaker Bar, Torx bits, snap ring pliers and Hammer/punch.

I haven't pulled the syncros apart yet, but they should be be that much tougher.

Syncro kits and basic rebuild kits are available for <$200. Master kits (all bearings and bushings are around $400. Billet keys run aroud $95 and Steel Shift forks run around $50-$75.

Here's a pretty good link to a step by step on LS2.com

http://www.ls2.com/forums/showthread...&threadid=1877

There are also free online parts lists and drawings if you google. Or you can buy them on ebay.

Thanks for the info

If I were to get a transmission shop to do the work, what would I be looking at?

Dunno. The automatics used to run $1200 back in the day. I did it for less than a 1/3 of that

Had the same problem on my 02 Z06. Contact Rodney at RPM Transmissions (765) 524-5341 Tell him Darren sent ya. He's in New Castle, IN. I went up a few weeks ago on a Friday. He started working on the car about 2 or 3 pm and by 1030 or so that night, I was driving back home. He's quick and he's good. Cost about $1500 - $250 Labor (cheap) and about $1250 to replace synchro's, upgrade to billet keys, polish the hubs, new steel fork and a few other goodies. He's the man and a really overall great guy.
