Default Honda ATF in a M6?

I'm looking to change the tranny fluid and I seem to recall a few people saying that Honda AFT fluid worked really good in the M-6 transmission... am I hallucinating?

What does the transmission call for?
The reason I asked is because I own a 2000 S10 that uses 'friction modified syncromesh'. There was a little confusion among all three dealers I went to saying what it takes is 'syncromesh' fluid.
All three places said that this is the most popular fluid for GM vehicles and even the Honda car dealers sometimes come over for some of this fluid.

I did end up getting the friction modified syncromesh.

Good point... is it just a straight fluid replacement... or do I need to add another tube of gunk like you do for the differential?

Our T-56's do not call for a friction modifier. It is my opinion that syncromesh is the best you can get. However because it cost so much, about $9 a quart, and I have cases of Honda ATF-z1 laying around I put honda fluid in my tranny. It shifts great and I like it. Honda fluid is pretty much a dexron III base with a few more addatives, it's a really good quality fluid. But also you probably don't have cases of the stuff like I do and I'm sure it's probably around $10 a quart like syncromesh so if I were you I'de just get syncromesh.

I'd go with the syncromesh, I've been told by three dealers that the honda dealers buy syncromesh from them so that tells me the GM fluid is better than the honda stuff.
How much is the honda fluid anyway, it's got to be at least $5 a quart. If your trans takes three quarts you're saving a whopping $12.

Tranny takes 4 quarts and the Honda ATF-Z1 costs $4 per quart. However, if you whine, like I do, they'll normally mark it down to $3.50 per quart. I've run it in both the 6 speeds I have.

The Honda ATF-Z1 is ATF. The synchromesh is MTF, which Honda also has their wn version of.

I use Honda ATF myself and love it.

i was told that you cant use syncromesh in pre- 99' models bc some internal part is made of paper and it will make it fall apart, as for the post 99 cars its ok to use. Is this true, what the hell is made of paper material??

I inside diameter of the blocker ring is lined with paper, it's actually a modified paper. It's there to provide a smoother friction surface, when you shift, the shift fork moves the synchronizer against the blocker ring, the blocker ring stops or at least slows the gear down so the syncro can slide over the cogs on the end of the gear.

The paper material is held on with glue similiar to an automatic transmission fiction disc, the wrong chemical, even water can destroy the glue.

In the old days there was no paper it was just the brass blocker ring against the cone side of the gear. Thats when gear oil was used.
