GTO's use a triple cone blocker ring, different gear ratios and different sliders. The f-body uses all single cone blockers. GTO's are just like the Vette.

And that usually adds 200-300 to the rebuild over an F Body T56 .

Yes you can but you would be cheaper to get a GTO. Everything inside the trans except bearings, forks and shift rails would have to change.

Pros - much better syncro design that last longer and shifts better

Cons - cost more $$$$$ to convert and to rebuild when needed

so cost wise would it not be cheaper in the long run/ make more sense to just get a built GTO 6 speed and send in your T56 with some cash and have a stout kick a$$ Tranny that will take some serious abuse?

and on that topic how much abuse will a built GTO tranny take?

That's what I did, only I sold my Fbody tranny privately for a lot more than you'll get for the "core charge" from the shop. I sold my Fbody T56 for over half the price of the built GTO tranny from Six Speeds Inc. After selling the T56 and a 10-bolt I had, I only ended up spending around $600 on the brand new, totally built GTO transmission.

And the GTO trans I got from Six Speeds Inc. is rated to 700rwhp/700trtq from what they advertise, but I'm not making anywhere near that power....yet.
