What's this sound?

When I take the car out of gear and let the car coast, I hear a clicking sound come from underneath...(chatter??)
It also does it sometimes when in gear but with no load.

Also, when I hammer it, the shifter seems to lift up a bit into the car, is this normal or is the trans mount showing signs of wear/failure?

thanks

Probaly the rear end thats the same thing my car does. Time for a new rear..........the only hard part is deciding 8.8, 12 bolt or 9 inch .........

Re: What's this sound?

But my car is stock except a lid for now (weekend H/C install)
Could it just be the U-joints?

It sounds like it is coming from the tranny and not the rear...?

well....go with an aftermarket polyurathane tranny mount. My car did that once really bad. I broke the tranny mount. I thought the whole underside of my car was coming out. It was under warranty so I got a stock mount back in. I'm plannin on ordering the poly one though. Laterz Justin :secret:

Re: What's this sound?

The gearbox in these cars is fairly strong. In order to make it as strong as it is, they had to increase the spacing between the main and counter shafts in the transmission. This requires larger gears. The larger the gear, the more it tends to "rattle" back and fourth against it's opposite gear (there has to be some slack or they would get hot and bind up). This is a normal side effect of this transmission. When it is in neutral and the clutch is out, it will "rattle" (and some other times as well). Don't panic. You're ok.
