Manual Trans fluid I did a search and everything I kept finding the argument was over different tranny fluid eating up stock blocker rings. Well I ordered the level 1 tranny parts from six speeds inc. and was wondering what fluid to put back in it. I've always just ran dex III. I was gonna put RP since thats whats in my motor and rearend. I've heard alot about synchromesh. What is everyones preference on fluid is with the carbon fiber blocker rings/synchros.
I would just go with Dex III to be safe since that's the only "approved" fluid by GM, but Six Speeds Inc uses Mobil 1 in all of their trannies and recommends it. They do not recommend Royal Purple because supposedly it has an additive in it that has "been proven" to eat up the blocker ring material in these transmissions.
On a side note, I asked Royal Purple about this specifically since I was curious and they gave me the "if that's the case, [insert name of employee here] is going to be quite upset because he's been running it in his 2002 Z28 for [X] years and has never had a problem", blah blah blah.
Basically, I don't know what to think, but if there's even a slight chance that it might damage my brand new $2,250 transmission, I'm not gonna risk it for at MOST a couple horsepower.
Just my $0.02.

I use the castrol NON synthetic Dex 3. No problems with it. I would agree with everyone else to say continue to run Dex 3. If it was a completley different set up trans with different blocker rings and such then another option may be there but for stock continue useing Dex 3.

RP ATF for me, all the way. Factory spec is Dexron ATF, Syncromesh is an upgrade. Any synthetic will be a further upgrade, IMO. I know that synthetic fluid runs about 20 degrees cooler in differentials. I'm sure something comparable is true for manual trannies so I am happy with my choice. I do know RP has chemistry as good as any in the biz so I lose ZERO sleep.
The answer is pretty simple, really. The DexIII / ATF is cheaper, recommended by the MFG, won't cause compatability probs with the synchro material. Synchromesh is a blend of synthetic and Dino oils and is ok for warm weather operation. Its a little thicker and can be a problem in cold operation. T56s have always had carbon particle blocker rings as an option. Vipers always had'em ,Fcars converted to paper-linings early on. If you don't know what linings are in your trans, why risk sure damage by re-engineering the oil?

Because I do know whats going to be in it. As stated carbon blocker rings are going back in. That was the point of this thread because everything I searched for was refering to the stock paper lineings. If i was going back with stock blocker rings I wouldnt have posted anything because I know regular dex III is recomended. Since their not going to be stock I was just wondering if there was a better fluid that could be used and still be safe. Its pretty simple ya know.
I would say you have plenty of information in this thread to make your choice. It shows how split the thought process is on choosing a transmission oil depending on who you talk to. It's highly unlikely that anyone else is going to chime in and say something profound that hasn't already been covered. I would just keep searching, reading up, and then figure out a logic to making your decision. Good luck.
I put dexron 3 cheap stuff in my stage 4 from sixspeedsinc, then swapped after 3000 miles for mobil 1. Figured the cheapo would clear any debris from the rebuild, now the $7/quart mobil 1 can lube me for 50k miles or so.

Thanks guys. I ended up getting the synchromesh. Tranny isnt done yet though. Good idea on using the cheapo stuff to clean her out. Notice any difference at all going to the mobil?

A bit late, but I have had fantastic results and long-term stability with AmsOil products, ATF in the trans and 85-140 in the diff. Had the same fluid in my 97 Formula for over 100k miles and it shifted like butter until it's brutal death - use the same fluids in my '02 Z06 now also...
